I have a buddy who has just started building his own trailer queen. He has a Scout II with 35s, he wants quarter elipticals. Is this something I should advise him otherwise on or should help and learn? Are they tough to do with a 120v flux core mig welder? I don't know, he's a smart kid but is this too much for a beginner?
You gotta start somewhere, although, I would recommend a bigger welder or tack up what you want to do and then bring it to a professional like Cory over at WayOffroad (also his POR name so search for him...wayoffroad) in Dover. Great guys to work with and they always have cool chit kicking around the shop. Plus, Cory could give you a better idea on the "beginner" or not question.
The fab work isn't *that* tough... if you know what your doing.
However the welder you spec'd is way inadequate. I'd be looking at a decent 220V, shielded machine and the knowledge of how to use it. Or if your good with a stick welder...
Be prepared to do allot of research into link geometry, that's were the secret is, the actually gluing stuff in place is the easy part.
If you realy use a 120V flux core machine to do build a suspension, call darwin first and make a reservation. It will break, and you will die.
No, seriously, you WILL DIE. Better yet, have your buddy test drive it, so he dies. Then use whatever money he leaves behind and buy a 210 AMP machine in his honor. It'll be touching and save your life.
I have never owned a 120V machine, nor would I build anything out of one. If you want his trailer to be safe ~ as well as the suspension ~ you'll need a 210 amp machine AT LEAST. Also use SOLID wire w/ sheilding gas ~ they are cleaner and will get better penatration.
I own a 110 volt welder. So far I have built a fab table, two battery trays, welded up new exhaust, and fixed a fence gate. I would not use it for any kind of suspension/ cage work.
Damian, I was looking at your 4 link kits and 1/4 elliptical kits. I'm thinking of doing something like that on a Scout 80, but the 4 link page said it was only for a frame with 33 inches outside measurement only. What would happen if I put it on my '64? It measures 35 inches outside.

some one said "or get a stick" is he saying that if you get a 110v stick welder you will be fine welding suspension stuff together i am trying to do the same thing on a college budget and the 110 arcs are a lot less money than any mig or 220.

my 110v stick is rated for 3/16" single pass -- which id guess would be sufficient but i wouldn't trust any suspension work to it --or cage work or anything else where failure would be life threatening
do it right you might not get a chance to live to regret it

Don't waste your money on a 110V anything if you're looking to do suspension work.
Look around for an used 220v Miller AC/DC Thunderbolt. Make sure you get one with DC capability. I bought mine for $200. Try to get the accessories with it: chipping hammer, helmet, wire brush, etc. Try some 1/8" 7018 rod to start with. Cutting the rods in half will make learning a lot easier.
If you haven't done anything with the Scout yet and need some help and a welder; I have a 255 lincoln Powermig and will weld it up for you guys. I'm only about 35 minutes away in Strafford, NH. Good luck. The more scouts wheelin' in rust land the better!.
