So I had the misfortune of my timing chain breaking while driving down the HWY this weekend. What are the chances of there being enough clearance between the valves & pistons? I have a 345 V8, 1979 Travelor. The motor runs (ran) sweet with 180,000 miles on it. Can I simply replace the chain? Any advice or tips would be great.

Nothing to worry about, you have a SSII. Those came with hydraulic driven worm gears and never wear out. You could upgrade to a larger orifice in your ANL tube and get better mileage out of it though.

Well no wonder if you are going to flame a DAN you ought to at least make him understand why his question was stoopid. You guys got the softserve half of this board believing that they need to replace the timing chain.

however, i also think this is why the IH board on pirate sucks so bad. i mean, you might as well not check it but once a week. newbs show up and post a legitimate question (to them at least) and get run off soon afterwards. ive been cruising the board for a while, just not posting because it does no good unless you post count is over 4 gazillion. anyways, somebody let them in on the "secret" and maybe they'll come back for seconds sometime. im not gonna be the one to spoil the fun though.
oh yeah, ive got a gm lt1 so IH timing chain issues dont apply to me.

Finally pulled a 304 I blew up on I-80 apart and found it IS possible to destroy the timing gears. There were something like 10 chipped teeth and one was missing entirely. Course that went with the #7 con rod failure (2+ pieces) and a destroyed #7 crank journal. Believe the entire problem was attributable to the infamous missing 7th qt of oil-funky oil pump relief problem at high rpm-high speed....

So replacing my timing chain with timing gears was a waste of time !
I guess the gears break also .
