We ran 35's on a stock Scout II PS pump on Rockscout. Had 0 problems even with all the crap we put it through while on course. I don't know if it still is, I think Dboy upgraded the steering to hyrdo-assist for the current owner. I don't know if he changed the pump or not, but until then it had the same pump that was on the engine when binderbound bought it.
On rock scout I went with a psc pump to handle the hydro-assist and hydro-boost I added. Nice unit, little pricey but for something as important as steering and braking it was well worth it.

I ran a stock Scout II pump with 36" tires. I did the 'high-flow' mod to it and added a cooler (cheapie transmission cooler).

It would get hot once in a while. But seemed to work fine.

I ended up switching to some junk yard pump with a bigger pullie after a while, I think it was when I cooked a PS Box and filled the whole system with metal bits...

Then I added hydro-assist and it all still worked fine. Then... my PS BOX crapped out again... Then....

I ran my stock SII pump with 37" Claws for about 3 years with no issues. Run a Ford Exploder hi-efficiency cooler on the low side, that will help. I finally went to a PSC pump last year when I upgraded to 40's and ram as "preventative measure".

I am in the process of fixing this. The new pump is the same as the 3/4 ton Chev, new PS filter, new 6" pully, and more holes in the inner fender...

That should do it. I was running my stocker with no "pressure" mod with Hydroboost brakes forever. It held up

The new pump, pully and filter are installed and operational with desired results,

Maybe I'll take my wife out wheeling on Mother's Day for a real test run.

I bought myself some flares for Fathers day. These are TBP Ultra Flex for Early Broncos. These installed easily and seem to provide a good amount of clearance for us baby Scouts.

I am stock width on the rear and +3" on the front axle. I looked at the Silverbacks Guido installed, but they would be too wide for my axles. The Silverbacks look like a great option for the full width crowd.

Yeah, I like the look/proportion of the standard Wild Horses Gorilla Flares, but I had to get the wider Silverbacks for tire coverage to pass inspection

Of course, all the uneducated people think it's a Bronco

It sure is nice to see FB is such a stable host for pictures in this build thread...

I am still having power steering issues. I think the problem can be one of 3 things.
1. Power steering pump
2. Power steering Box
3. Steering geometry...

The problem is after warming up, and after some normal on the road driving, the steering can feel completely manual, like the loss of most or all power assist. I have replaced the pump with a one ton GM which is oversize when compared to a stock SII pump. Things seem fine when cold or cool, but after driving for a while, not so good. I am running an aux cooler.

The box is a reman and not one of the old shitters I had laying around. I do not know if there is a need to bleed a power steering system or not. What would be a reasonable test for the box, drop the drag ling and see how it does with completely no load?

The third option is messed up steering geometry. totally unlikely in this well engineered system, but just throwing it out there...

Here is a pic of the passenger's side.

And as much of the whole front end as I could get.



The Panhard bar has no binding at rest, and should not effect steering anyway.

The drag link has a TRE on the Pittman and a rod end on the other end. The drag link does not bind at rest.

The Tie Rod has rod ends on both ends and is purposely limited from rotating very much. I can not run the drag link to the stock knuckle hole in the arm without a big negative effect on the turning radius (one way).

Any ideas on the original Power steering question?

My guess would be the box. Pump has been replaced and I don't see any major issues with the steering geometry.

If it changes when warmed up it should be nothing to do with the geometry as that doesn't change when warm...... I don't know but don't ignore the hoses also. Hoses coming apart on the inside or FOD blockages can cause some strange issues too.

When it is hott you sweat and when you sweat ur hands get sliipery, and then you can't steer as well as you normally would. Therefore it is harder to steer when it is hot.


Is the power steering all stock? Got a pic of it and aux cooler?

Did you open the reservoir and look at the fluid when hot? Can you see bubbles/foam. Looking for caveatting issues. What fluid, and how old or hours on it.
If you have an IR gun shoot the reservoir over 160 is too hot.

I had the issue of the power assist going away randomly also. It would steer great one minute then it would be like not having power assist at all! It felt like it was bypassing through the pressure relief. On mine, I could try to turn with no luck, let go of the wheel then try again with great results.I replaced the pump and it got better for awhile then came back. Mine would do it cold, as in first thing in the morning. I am going to see what the pump on the swap motor does. I might try bumping the pressure a bit to see if it helps. Other than that I will eventually add a ram assist.

I had similar problems with my scout as well. I was replacing pumps every trip, under warranty of course. The parts guy finely said that the pump that I was using had a cross over part number. I use the mid 80 Chevy power steering pump with power assist brake booster, they were having to many warranties on them, I up graded now several trips ago and still no problems.

Probably to simple - but I was having issues and I turned to the Royal Purple's Max steer fluid (sorry but truly not spam) and issues are gone!

I was using NAPA's brand steering fluid and had similiar issues.

I typical Binder fashion, cheapest fix is always the best...

That way we can maximize our costs.
