My first race I ran my 235/75-15 *RECAP* snow tires on the nose, and some 235/75-15 all-season radials on the back! They had us start w/ the front tires in a mud hole.. I went in a little too far and couldn't even back up to the start line.

Just got the 1980 Chevy 1-ton Dana 60 (complete all the way out to the manual lockout hubs) home.
It is still sitting on the trailer looking pretty. Gonna wait till tomorrow (because it is getting dark) and unload it with the tractor. I see some 38-39.5 swampers in my future Nothin holdin me back but MO'MONEY At least now I can wheel like a madman and not worry about protectin the d44's (damn they look small now)

Now you guys need to find some more cheap 60s and share your good fortune with your northern IH brethren. And yes, 44s do start to look small after a while.. 'specially after I'd been working on my Travelette with that 11" drop out rear end..

Since someone mentioned Rockwells now I'm
wondering which to install. I've got a pair of stock open rockwells, yokes,NIB ujoints, fresh brake job on all four drums/all new shoes,5 military tires (20" tires),spring clamps and ubolts. Should I now install them on my ScoutII or should I trade all of this stuff for one good front Dana60? I already have a rear 14bolt that I picked up awhile ago. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? thanks

ditto don't waste your time with the rockwells, I've heard of people braking those just as often as FF 14bolts. |

the main reason i went rockwells was the price. i sold out my dana 60/14 bolt with a detroit for 2k. it was out of a cuccv ambulance with 4.56s and 8k original miles. took the money bought a set 38x14.5 sxs for my cruiser and still have enough money to pay for the rockwells and locker for the front rockwell[i will just weld the rear] and i can make a pinion mounted disk brake set up for nothing. you use a chevy rotor and caliper. they all ready have 6.72 gearing so no money needs to be spent. the axles are only about 20 pounds heavier[after you remove the brakes] and 1/4 less clearance than a 60, but with a nice smooth round bottom. the drive shafts don't need to have a fortune spent on them because of the flange location. i am going to use a adapter plate from the stock bolt pattern to a wide 5 sprint car rims, so i have cheap and easy rims available. i can build everthing i need to make them work. so for me its the ultimate lowbuck set up. but this is all going in a tube chassie 120 in wheel base rig. the top loaded axles are complete overkill for 38s and down. because you need so much lift to clear the axle. just another idea to throw around. by the way a guy from oklahoma is putting my axles under his scout. i sold them in the for sale section on this board. he is on here all the time, just can't remember his name. just something to think about. if you have good fab skills you can get a set of rockwell set up way cheaper than a sixty/14 bolt. later mike
