Talking SCORE!

Well I scored some 38.5x14.50 SuperSwamper TSL/SXs yesterday (4 of them for $200). Got them siped, mounted and balanced at my favorite Discount Tire for free.

And now Snoopy has some real nice tread back on it. (The 36's were BALD!) I'm just happy the tires filled the fenders the way they did.


The problem is that i'm going to need to go full-width on Snoopy to get a decent steering radius.

THE PLAN! The 74 Travellal I got from Jen and Ken Farmer is donating is 180K mile old axles (5-lug 44s front and rear) so Snoopy can do some serious stuff.

Meanwhile, the T-all gets a nice *newer* Corp 14-bolt rear and a HD Dana44 front. This is much better since it has a healthy IHC392 under the hood (that 392 has scrapped the rear 44 it currently has). So finally I'll be able to use it as a tow vehicle. I'll be picking up all the patch panels and getting it painted in a couple months (during our winter slow-down). And the T-all will become my daily driver - I don't know what it is with that thing, but its so much fun to drive.

All in all its going to be a little work, but I think that when its done it'll all be worth it.

One happy Scout/T-all owner...

Why not just use a different backspacing on the rims? cheap and easy <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

For that matter, on the "lift little, trim lots" concept..

1) coils to avoid hitting the springs or

2) SUBFRAME IT! to avoid hitting the frame.

Offset wheels? Noway...I got the wheels I have for free (came with the 36s i bought for $150) and the 383.5s recommend 15x12's - Which are over $100 a peice. So my options are (1) get new rims [400 + special order offset triples-quadruples cost of tires] or (2) Get new axles [free + parts] and get the width that I want as well.

There is also a problem that I've found with offset wheels. Although they space the wheels out, the pivot point where the wheels turn is still at the same place so that when you turn you end up still hitting the frame/springs anyway.

You've been readin my mind? A guy here in the springs parts out old EBs and has a few spare front coil buckets I will be using.

So the new front axles will do 2 things (one of which, i neglected to mention - oops). Not only will the wider axles help my steering radius, but it will also give me the room I need to mount my 3-link system. Then the back end will get our 4-link system and Snoopy will replace the Lil Mule as Project 2. But this time it'll be a little more involved. We will be doing the full axle rebuilds with Lockers front and rear, do a Quarter Elliptic rear and a Coil front. I've also found a powersteering bracket and I'll have full write-up on how to convert an old 800 to power steering with minimal parts.

Your reading my mind again. The rear bed is in about as good a shap as the rockers. So it already needs replaced. If you look at this picture:

you'll notice that the trailing edge of the saddle tanks are visable from the fender - in fact they can easily be hit. For this reason those tanks are going away and a full tube-frame structure will replace the back half of the Scout. A 30 gallon fuel cell will be placed directly above the rear axle (Dan says I should use beer kegs for the feul cells - or did he say he was going to, I think he is - I don't drink).

The cage will also put a single rear seat mounted forward and center of the fuel cell so that Snoopy will effectively become a 3-seater. The I'm toying with using expanded metal so that you can see through the rear floor to the ground...but I think that wouldn't be very *smurfy* if it starts raining and those tires start flinging mud.

So, things will start happening for Snoopy soon enough, but one step at a time.

So, What's up with this? This one is kinda hard, but easy to explain. Being normal people here at D and C, we decided to - well - relax a bit. Sure we build some of the most extreme Scouts out there, but this time we need to relax and build our own Scouts. I'm sure someday things will be different, but for now, we don't have thousands upon thousands of dollars to spend on our Scouts. And although it would be nice, we don't need Dynatrac Dana 60s, SuperSwampers, Quarter Elliptics or ARBs - No, we just want to take that Scout we bought for $400-500 and make it the best we can with as little as we can - then wheel the heck out of it.

I hear that brother. I bought my rock SCout for $350 to get running and destroy at last years xmas tree burn. I spent 2 weekends trying to get it going before I realized that the 345 that only needed a coil was really a 266 with 14psi of compression

I hear ya on that one. I was gonna just get my scout runnning and slap some 31's on it till I break and axle or something then I was gonna go 3/4ton axles, big-block, the works.

Now I'm sayin if I just save up for tires (with christmas coming around and my b-day just around the corner that should be easy) then I can do the SOA, slap the big tires on and start the rebuild of the caddy engine and I'll be set by the end of next year for RMIHR <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I got bit <IMG SRC="smilies/blush2.gif" border="0">

I saw this Zuk and I figured that my Scout would look real good with a similar set-up. I am going to wait until the body is totally thrashed though.

You have your head up your ass!!! The rims can be had for 60 bucks each, and no the tires do not hit the springs. How do I know? I'm running 38's on a 2" back spacing . If you are gonna go to the trouble of swappin the axles why put a 44 in the front? Hope you have a few extra shafts because you are gonna need them.

Exactly, that's exactly what I want to do with my extra tub. Hack the back off and turn it into a cab (won't be using the terra bulkhead). Mount a third seat in the middle and build a bed. <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">
