Saturday Wheeling

Well, we said we were going to go out and beat up our junk, and we did.

Actually, I think I was the only one with Mechanical problems. Phil in his Toyota, then me, then Mark A climbed the wall in quick succession. Then it was winchfest, then Rick W (Scoutaholic) climbed it.

Great fun, even though the one obstacle took about 3 hours to get all the rigs up. I think all 3 jeeps had to winch, as well as the Suzuki...

I trashed my lockright. I think I chewed the teeth up. It spontaneously locks and unlocks the axles. I am going to see if powertrax will warrant it. Meanwhile, I am going full spool in the rear. If powertrax will warrant the lockright, I will move it, and the rear carrier to the front where I currently have my LS, which did quite well, but I think I want a locker up front.

It was interesting driving home on the highway. The lockright would suddenly unlock, throwing me into one wheel drive, which would cause me to swerve a little. I could not apply torque and turn at the same time, but I could accelerate straight ahead reasonably. It was touch and go as I got near home, as I had one corner, climbing a steep hill and turning. The rear end was going bang, bang, bang, as I eased it around until it straightened out.

Got her home though. she is sitting in the garage. Going to go pop the rear diff and see the damage here in a little while.

Here is a pic of the Wall at Highrider with Keith standing in front of it for perspective...

Other Rigs

This was a pretty sell setup wrangler, locked front and rear, low gears, swampers, 35'6 (or 36's?) but he had carb problems. Kept stalling out. This is a wheelbase obstacle. The longer scout wheelbase helps a lot. He ended up winching over.

This Toy could not get over either. He had an LS up front, but it was not helping him. He had to winch also.

This little suzuki was open on both ends. He had a lot of trouble, but fortunately, he was so light, Rick W was able to easily winch him up and over. He even had a tow hook, something which was lacking in several rigs on this trip, despite Mark's listing them as essential for this trail.

Melanie gave it a good try, but her open front diff, greatly hindered her. Her lift springs did not give her enough droop and she kept loosing traction on the light tire.

This Scout also came close to making it over, but ended up stalling. When his starter wouldn't kick in, he needed a tug to get up to flatland to get it started again.

I didn't get any pictures of Mike on the wall. This was him at the entrance. He needed a tug to make it up and over also.

This Jeep was just a hair away from making it over. He worked the wall hard, and in fact crested, but then slid back down, with all four tires spinning hard.
He did some great two wheel stands though as he attacked the wall.

Pics

Thanks. Just a cheap little digital camera. I took some with my Canon SLR, and they will probably be a lot better. But, it takes time to develop film...

I thought that was how all lockrights handled normally.

Let me know how you like the spool in the rear on the streets. I am pretty close to going that route myself. My Lockright is a pain on the road - tons of tourque steer - and I swear one of these days it is going to engage and , it seems to hook up with a little too much umph.

Yeah, torque steer is an issue, although not too bad with an auto. I know when my tranny is going to shift, so I am ready for that little wiggle it does...

I'll let you know what I think of the spool.

I wondered if anyone had any cool tricks.

I'll give you a ring. I am uploading the pics of the lockright. Teeth are all worn out...

Mangled Lockright

Basically, the teeth are worn right off on the driver side... Just some little stubs left. Much too shallow to hold the torque.

I don't think this happened Saturday. I think Saturday just finished it off.

actually, IIRC, he made it. He was having carb issues, but it would startup and run well. I think he finally made it in the end. Good guy, definatly going to have to wheel with him again. ARB's front and rear, drives well, didn't complain or whine one bit, willing to lend a hand.

I like people like that.

We had fun, Burned up two rolls of film on Pat's SLR, just have to get them developed and scaned. Been a busy day today...

Nope, he winched. I remember he was the first to winch, and we pulled cable for him. He used his own winch.

It was a good group of people, but that obstacle should be done in groups of 4, tops. Any more than that is too many.

Or, I should say, max of 2 or 3 that will need to winch. Rick, Phil, Mark and I made it up in about 5 minutes each, on the outside, maybe less. But, each of the other rigs was about 20 minutes or so. 3 rigs an hour is slow progess when you are winching 6 rigs...

And how many rigs on that trail had no tow hooks, and no good place to hook a strap??? Sheesh. If there was one thing I wanted to holler about, it was the lack of tow points. other than that, good bunch of rigs and people, but spend the $20 and get some good tow hooks.

On the streat, its damn neer invisable (as long as the tire pressures are the same, or close). *Tight* corners makes the tires chirp/bark/hop. Parking lots are FUN (love the looks people give)

Becasue I still have just a 44, I try to take it easy in the corners, to much gas and I'm sure I will something. MTR's are grippy.

Havn't had it on the ice/slippery yet. Been on wet roads and I haven't noticed it, but I'm weary. Too used to open diffs, afraid the rear will kick at the wrong time. I'll find out this winter.

SO far so good. I'll go ARB/OX/E-locker if/when I get the $$$, for more predicatbility in the winter an better tire wear, but I got nothing against a SPOOL!!!

I guess I shouldn't talk too much... I didn't have front points for years, and I never have had rear.... working on it, but dont' even have a decent bumper.....

but yes, good FRONT tow points are really nice... even cheesy ones, but that hold... if your going to need to be towed/straped/winched.

If your really pulling and winch on your scout try and stay away from the cheesy hooks - they are bad news! I'm sure you've heard all the stories blah, blah, blah....

Anyway, the place I have been doing most of my wheeling is private so they have all there own "rules" one thing they don't like is hooks. They prefer soild attachment points capable of securing a screw type clevis too.

I used 2 pieces of 1/2 angle, punched a 1 1/16" hole in each piece to match as center a center hole for a 1" clevis. Then punched 2 holes in each piece to bolt it down. Welded the two pieces together to form a "T" and bolted it to the front bumper. When secured with a big clevis my truck or the strap is going to break first.

Here is the only pic I could find out the clevis mount.

FWIW - R&P 4x4 in Oregon City, OR sells a clevis mount that is an engineered model of this same thing - there's are nice and pretty and they work great. Just way out of my price range!
R&P

Actually, thats pretty good tech.... 1/2" angle is cheap, and easy to work with like that. I like it, may have to make some up and find a good way to bolt them to the back... another option is to take some 1" flat bar and drill 3 holes. One for the D ring, and two to bolt it to the frame. I would prefer to bolt in shear, rather than tention... but 4-bolts are nice.....

thanks for the idea ugly...

(hmm, if I weld some of those up, I can get $30 a pop....... hmmm )

You'll want $30 a pop after you punch all the holes and grind them until they look half way good!!

I had the benifit of a jazillion ton punch press to make the holes in the 1/2 angle. No way I was going to drill those out - I'd still be drilling.

Unless of course you had access to CNC equipment below your office!

I am thinking that some nice stainless ones would be purty...What do you think RUSTO? I know that you like the glitter and bling chrome look...

Give me a holler, cause I need to make some for the back of my rig soon....

On the strap attachment...

I run two hunks of 3/8" angle on my front bumper.

Specifically spaced far enough apart that my tow-bar fits in just right... but it's also just the right width for a 2" strap.

Other friends run a single centered like this (no tow-bar requirement).

Two hunks of 1/4 or 3/8" plate, drill a 5/8" hole through both sides and use a regular receiver hitch pin.

Or go bigger. Whatever your fancy.

I don't see weld-on D-rings at Pacific here in Helena.

They do carry 3/8" angle - and I have some in my shed - and with a drill press, it's easy to punch holes in stuff.

Then grab the electric metal glue gun..
