Red face front end rebuild

Well 23 years and 230,000 miles latter the stock front end on my luv is in need of a rebuild. Has anyone doen a rebuild on an 8bolt ifs, i have the parts (ball joints bearing seals and tie rods) but would just like to know if there is anything to look out for. And yes i have thought about an SAS but as this is my daily driver i need minimum down time. Thanks.

just put the yota front in,spring over the rear and adapt a yota front shaft to your case. i did mine for less than $200 and one week of down time. one saturday in the rain torching junk off and five eve's after work glueing junk on. the toughest part was building the frame extension for the front spring mounts.

you are at about the same mileage as when my ifs ring and pinion departed the housing and a tie rod end ripped itself out of the sleave.IMHO i wouldn't put a penny into the ifs front end,but if you do it's pretty basic auto repair type stuff .

yeah well i already placed the order for the parts. Good thing it was only $250. I kinda whanted to do an SAS but whith this many miles and tha fact that its primarilly used on the road led me to just rebuilding the front end to retain some better on road manners, and it has been proven to be reliable(especially whith whoping 28" tires). That and also i ruteinly tow a 3,000lbs trailer so much more lift than the 2" i have on it would get kinda scary

have you done the head gasket yet? you might start thinking about the timing chain slider/tensioner,mine came apart spreading chunks of plastic everywhere. the manual says to remove most of the front end to get the oil pan off,so the timing cover can be removed. i skipped the front end removal since i have a 3" body lift i was able to get the motor high enough. i'm rambling....my point is ...plan a weekend and drop the front end stuff for your rebuild and take care a the timing chain sliders while things are out of the way.

actually the 1.8L in it only has 12k on it, i rebuilt it last summer to make shure that stuff didnt leave me stranded and whith out a rig. So all of that stuff is brand new, and i rebuilt the radiator to make shure it runs nice and cool (180* all the time)
The only part that wasnt reliable was the old point type distributor, but i got an elctronic one from an 82 luv and solved that problem in an afternoon.
