I grenaded my Lock-rite!!!(I think)
I went wheeling on Sat, found a cool trail and decided to give it a try. It was a washout from snow run-off so it was fairly loose large rock. The first part was fine, just steep and narrow, but then you had to climb a short waterfall, and being loose rock, I wanted to make it in one shot... Bad choice... when I got my front tires up the waterfall, I got hung up on the rear, so I decided to back up a hair and "get it". The front wheels started hopping like a mad rabbit, and I'm assuming thats when the damage occured. I didnt hear anything, but my tires where throwing cooler-sized rocks down the wash so??? Anyways, after a few more attemts, my buddy says my right front tire isnt turning. I back out of the wash and check it out. My CV isnt turning either... My driver side is working fine, but we decide to head for home... BTW we are on an old logging road covered in 2 ft of wet slushy snow. I try to turn around to head down the mountain, and after a few attempts I hear a huge popping sound coming from my driver side hub... Lets just say I relied on my friend's tow strap til we got out of the snow. I'll find out this week what exactly happened, but either I broke an inner axle or 2 or I blew up my lockrite!!! I'm not too worried, as this was a "lets try to destroy my IFS because its the last run before SAS" kinda day so it was hella lota fun, and at least I was able to drive home, I'm just pissed that the waterfall got the best of me, and that I might have wrecked the one thing on my IFS that was worth selling...

Joel-
I would place bets on you breaking the inner stub on the passenger side axle. I have seen this before, but have not seen the inner/broken parts yet. I would say, due to the design, it is pretty hard to frag a lockright and still have it work sorta. I would then guess that you were wheeling in 3-wheel drive and toasted the driverside hub. I agree.I can't see a Lock-right smokin. Then again I wasn't there and you might have had that dog floored and 4 feet in the air when the front came down...LMAO.It sounds like a CV to me but I'm an idiot most the time..LOL.

Yup. Then it went up and down 4 or 5 more times before I let off the stupid pedal I'm going to have to adjust my driving style a bit when I put in the SBC and 37's, or I'll be blowing up my d44 shafts every run. Hehehehe.I checked out my front end today just to see what I broke. Turns out I grenaded the inner CV on both sides. I'm curious to see if it was the cage that broke or I stripped out all the slpines, but I'm betting I grenaded the cages on either side. When I pull everything apart this weekend I'll check to see what broke and probably send the bits to Travis AKA Papa Smurf, to see if those parts can be "Smurfed". I guess that means my Lockrite and Warn hubs are still for sale ![]() I'm pretty sure I'll need to do some major fender trimming for the 37"s too; I managed to bend both front and rear edges of my rear fenderwells from tire contact and thats with 33"s. Granted I'll be lifted a bit more with the springs I'm going to run, and I was definitely pushing my truck hadrer than usual, but I was a bit suprised that I got tire contact there...

Glad to hear you didn't kill the Lockrite. I will say though that it CAN be done. This saturday i went wheelin with a friend in his Yj and we noticed one front tire wasn't spinnin. We ended up pullin the front cover off the axle and found out that the wheel wasn't spinnin cause the axle disconnect broke, but also found that he had sheared all 4 of the pins in his lockrite. 4 new pins and he should be good to go again, but it definitely stopped the wheelin for the day.

Thats what I thought I had done. I'm sure if I would have looked closer I would have seen the inner CV housing turning, but it wasnt too easy to see buried in 2 ft of snow and I didnt really care too much. This is the reason I always carried spare axles... this is the one trip I left them at the shop; not that I would have wanted to change them laying in a nice layer of slush
