Toyota Transmission to 3.2L/3.5L

I have a 99 Trooper with the AR-5 transmission that is stuck in 1st. So instead of rebuilding it or replacing it with a JY tranny, I figured I would replace it with a Toyota transmission, allowing for the option of dual cases.

From those few that have put a Marlin Crawler behind a 3.2L we have learned that a R series Toyota transmission will bolt to the AR-5 bellhousing used on the 3.5L. From what I understand the stock 3.2L flywheel and pressure plate is used with a clutch disk from the "toyota transmission to SBC 350" conversion. The Isuzu front bearing cover is transfered the Toyota transmission, then the odd Isuzu Clutch fork and throwout bearing can be used.

To do this I am assuming the no differences between the 3.5L and 3.2L Clutch. Does anybody know if there is a difference in the 3.5L vs 3.2L clutch?

Also, what R150f input shaft is used on this conversion. I think the one from the 3.0L is too short, does 3.4L shaft work? Or, do I have to have Marlin make me a custon one?

Thanks,
Nick

I have no idea the answer to your question, but.....

BellyDragger and Corbin are the only two that come to mind with the Marlin setup behind 3.2l. Randii has it but it was installed behind a 4 cyl and now a 302 kind of.
Curtis (SSS Rodeo) has one as well, but his was behind an earlier engine as well I think.

MJW has the 150 and Corbin has a 151F IIRC

I believe Marlin did both the installs start to finish, he is probably the best resource on this, however, you can probably pm
BellyDragger or Corbin on this board

Yeah, what Rufus said. Just gotta make some room in the shop and get the Trooper to the shop so I can pull the transmission. I need to send the stock Isuzu nose cone to Marlin so he can do some machining on it to fit the Toyota transmission. That will allow for the stock Isuzu clutch fork to be used. Every thing in the Bellhousing will be the stantard Isuzu, except the clutch disk.

And for any one wanting to do this to a 3.2l/3.5l, you will need a R150f from a 96+ Toyota. Marlin will be able to get everything done for mounting to the AR5(manual transmission) bellhousing from the 98+ 3.5L Troopers. He is more than willing to help with this, and is actually might even be more excited about than I am.

The Isuzu AR5 trans input shaft is 15/16" whereas the Toyota is 1 1/8". Because both transmissions are made by Aisin Seiki, they both share the same 9 bolt trans to bellhousing pattern.

Isusu chose to use a non-conventional reverse pull clutch assm. This moves the pressure plate pivot ring outwards resulting in a much stronger clutch in a restricted area bellhousing.

The special Isuzu nose cone for the reverse pull fork, must be bored, and the Toyota input must be removed from the trans, and o. d. ground to fit in the Isuzu nose cone.

The input pilot also needs to be extended and increased in size to fit the factory pilot bearing.

I owe this operation to BellyDragger who, without his hard work and persistance, none of this would be possible.

Thanks Marlin but my hat is off to you for not hanging up on me the first time I called you with the question of can it be done. I know you thought I was a tad bit crazy but you gave me some direction to folllow and I just pursued it.

Thanks again!

Belly Dragger, I almost forgot, I will be in Reno this weekend Thur, Friday, and Sat, Feb 12-14 at the Hilton for the Cal 4WD convention. I will be set up in the exhibit hall for the commerical vendors.
Hope you have some extra time to travel north of Cartoon City!
Sorry for the short notice.
