engine swap

I have a 91 rodeo with the 3.1 it is in dire need of replacement. Finding a used one around here is next to impossible. I have read up on a few others that will work, but not any info on year of donors or anything. I would prefere to use something that is carburated and will drop right in without extensive modifications. I have no emissions or safety inspections to worry about. Would like to go V8, but a six will work just fine. I do have the man 5 speed.

Thanks to any that can help.

If you decide to stay with a V6 a bunch of trooper guys have done a 3.4 swap from a camero(i think) and it is pretty much bolt in and should work with the 3.1L. If my Dad's 3.1L ever dies(197K and goin' strong) that's what I plan on doin' to it for him.

My budget is very low, so the easier the better, Is there any computer issues doing the 3.4? I am hopeing to stay 500.00 or less for a replacement engine. I am also having a hard time finding an idler arm for this rig. closest Isuzu dealer is around 100 miles away. Local parts stores don't even list one.

a $500 engine swap huh

let us know how that turns out.

you'd be lucky to do a straight replacement, same motor, from a junkyard, with you doing al the labor.

500.00 is the average junkyard engine price around here, I do plan on doing all the labor, can't see paying someone 50.00 an hour to do something I can do myself. 500 is about all I can pull out of my AMC resto fund.

Most chains of auto part stores have web sites that will sell you what the partslookerupers fail to find. For example, the NAPA online store shows a '91 Rodeo w/3.1 uses idler arm assy Item#: NCP2683720 for $96.49++. You can have it shipped right to you. That was just shooting from the hip . I imagine there are better deals on tougher parts at other web sites, YMMV, SYDFD, etc.

Seems to me you could put just about any 60* V6 in there if you plan on going with a carb. That means 2.8L, 3.1L, 3.4L, 3.8L, etc. You can find these engines in salvage yards in GM FWD cars like Chevy Berettas, Buick Park Avenues, Pontiac Grand Am's, and pretty much any mid 80's+ GM FWD car that has a V6. Im sure you could probably find a complete car for $500 or under if you look hard enough...

The only thing I would be concerned about is motor mounts. Be sure that they have provisions on the block for motor mounts. I believe they all do, but I could be wrong...

nah, not knocking you...........just saying the fluids, belts, mounts, yada, yada....can make something like this creep up in $$ pretty quickly.....especially if you are going to a different motor. $500 is just a tight budget. Junkyard motors are much less than $500 here, but you have to pull them yourself.

IMHO, the best bang for the buck would be the 3.4L camaro - 1992 +/- with "S" VIN

direct swap/power upgrade

all you need to do is tap the drivers side to re-locate the starter.

accessories and wiring are a direct swap.........still TBI. you can also run a 4.3L TBI on it if you are looking for more.

Don't go carb that's like a step back in time.

You are basically taking the camaro donor 3.4 block, crank, heads, timing chain, cam, pistons and valvetrain and adding all of your junk back on it.

You re-use your distributor and ignition, injection, intake and exhaust manifolds and engine accesories. Same computer same wiring.

Also did you try www.car-part.com?

I found these on www.car-part.com I bet you could call even the $600+ ones and they'd take $500 if you said "I'm buying one TODAY, do you want to sell one TODAY?"

3.4=60° and 4.3=90°
Not a direct swap, unless i'm sadly mistaken.

you are mis-reading

i am only talking the TBI unit. you can run the stock 4.3L tbi on the 2.8L, 3.1L, 3.4L's as a perfromance upgrade.

i am NOT saying run a 4.3L motor............different bell housings.

not exactly the swap for the Isuzu truck, but gives a lot of good info:
