Lockouts?

Just picked up my first trooper today!! A 1986 Trooper II 2-door. Drove it home 175 miles and got almost 30 miles to the gallon!!! Put it in 4wd and all seemed well until I made a sharp turn at which time and horrible ratcheting sound came from the front end It has auto hubs, but it sounds like a bad cv axle to me. But the 4wd works great, I mean besides the noise. HELP!!!

Were you on pavement or some other high-traction surface when this occurred? The Isuzu 4wd system does not have a center differential and, therefore, is to only be used on low-traction surfaces such as mud, sand, snow, etc. If you did a sharp turn in 4wd on a grippy surface, blowing an auto hub or CV is rather minor damage relative to what could have happened to your t-case. How about a little more information as to the testing conditions.

My 86 with carb would get 28-29 on the highway, at least it did before it scorched a valve. It really is surprising the mileage difference between the carb 2.3 and FI 2.6, I would have bet the 2.6 would beat it every time, but I guess that 2.3L carb is so restrictive it can't help but be fuel efficient.

It does sound like a CV if you hear the noise only when turning in 4WD. They sound like a CLACKETY-CLACKETY noise. The auto hubs can make a similar noise (maybe more like a clickity) though if they are not fully locked in or if you are in 2WD and they didn't disengage all the way. Could be it just hasn't been in 4WD for so long before you got it that the hubs are sticky.

funny sounds

hmm,
My 90' 4dr makes a clicking ratcheting sound when I have the wheel full one direction and am getting slight traction, like rocky stream, and give it power. snaps and ratches and seems to work fine, I just thought it was something with the auto hubs cause that's the only time it makes the sound. Most people replace the auto's with WARN manual hubs for offroading, I just havn't done it yet.

AISIN Manual Hubs

I have one pair of AISIN hubs with an individual 4 sale. I had another pair but in the move seem to have lost them...so this is my last set. If anyone wants more than what I have I can scower junk yards for you.
$100 for 3 hubs total plus $10 shipping

This coould solve your hub problems and save your axle and make that mileage a little better. These will fit 17 outer spline front Isuzu axles and they have the 6 bolt pattern for the hubs. I know they will fit 89 and newer and some of the older years too as long as the bolt pattern and splines match up. email me if you are interested brunsjt@hotmail.com
