Ignition Question on 87 Trooper

Hi everyone, I have been having a problem lately in my 87 trooper. I got many suggestions from everyone and tried them all, even replaced the carburator. Just today I finally found out what is the problem. My trooper stalls randomly. The tachometer starts bouncing around and then dies. Someone said, that because it is random it could be ignition related. I was deciding to mess with the ignition coil. Just to verify what I found wrong is called. The ignition coil is the piece that is on top of the engine where the wire from the ditributor connects to? If so, the other side of the ignition coil, there is another wire wire, what is that wire called? The wire is cruddy, especially where it connects to the coil. I was going to replace the coil and that wire, but I do not know what the wire is called.

correct me if i'm wrong but the tach gets its signal off the coil... so if the tach is bouncing around and the truck craps out its safe to assume the coil is slightly toasted.

Ignition on trooper

From what I have read, that is true. But the wire attached to the coil is pretty cruddy itself and I wanted to replace it but searching around, I cannot find what it is called. I checked autozone to order a coil but i cannot find what the wire is.

Buy a tech manual and there are instructions how you can test the resistance of the coil to see if it has shorted out. Inside are two windings insualted from each other and filled with oil to create a magneteic field and voltage inverter. If the primary and secondary coils short out the coil will nto work. You are better off testing to see if shit works than randomly replacing wires that just "look cruddy".

I would have to replace all my engine wires if I went on that diagnosis alone!

i have also heard before of a crappy tach being the cause of a truck to idle erradicly, however backwards that may sound it has been known to happen. but this was with an aftermarket tach... so try disconnecting the tach wire to see if you could isolate that out from bein a stupid possibility.
