Nothin' Nice: The Un-Naturally Asperated MJ Truggie Build

So back in October Dozer_xj and I set out on an epic adventure to to pick up what was supposed to be a "built" mj buggy I found on the Craigslist machine.

I had been collecting parts for my YJ build when i ran out of time/money/motivation. So i parted it out and began the hunt for something already complete. I thought i had found my huckleberry when i came across this "Sweet BUILT" Mj buggy. It didn't take long before we had the epic adventure planned out. We would go and buy it then head down to Louisville (where dozer's cousin lives) fix whatever needed attention then wheel the next day/night at DTOR for their Halloween run.

The adventure is chronicled in this thread: /forum/usa-great-lakes-states/1017642-dowhatyoulikewhatyoudo-midwest-wheeling-road-trip.html

Long story short, the PO had the right idea, but his execution was less than impressive... I wont go into detail in this thread about all the hack-tacular stuff i found (all of that info is in the other thread) But for the lazy:
x-member was junk
different ratios in axles
wont run in reverse
Bla bla bla

Here it is at winterfest (kinda) running for the last time on gasoline

This Thread is going to be covering the next stage of its existence.

I have already ditched the non-running renix junk in favor of the bbq fuel

Ive got this purdy little billet HEI distributor in place

the dilemma soon arose of how to get a 4bbl intake for my motor... and i also wondered if i could throw some flat top pistons in to to bump compression a little. But i feared the Since-you-was bug would run wild.... so after some pondering at work it hit me! FORCED INDUCTION!!!!

After all, I already owned like 80% of the parts to do it (or so i thought)
But it was too late, my mind was made up...

I've had this a while:

But it needed rebuilt, so i just bought a new one from flea-bay

the plan is to do a draw through turbo setup and use my stock tb and have the mixer on the inlet of the turbo

(I still need to buy a 425 setup) but basically everything else i have or has been ordered

I think it will work, i just have to keep my motivation this time.

so i went to badlands for a bacholer party and that coupled with the cooler weather has me remotivated to finish this pos

i have 90% of the fuel system
the downpipe is 1/2 done (need to figure out the WG)
mount turbo
plumb the intake and fuel then try to fire it up

then the front suspension needs some attention and what not

i think a realistic goal for completion is WF again LOL

I saw you said draw through? So carb before Turbo? Not afraid the gas will munch the seals in turbo? I like the enthusiasm! I'd love a turbo or two on my junk.

Why not efi with some big injectors and a progressive FPR?

The big question I guess is how much you planning to smash in there?

His renix system was a mess. The PO had rigged the wiring good. It would not run in reverse. The propane is so it runs without electronics (excupt the spark which is simple)

The Turbo is only to gain back the loss in power since propane does not have as much energy and it is 105 octane. It is also not going to be much more work and money (maybe less) then running the propane mixer on a carb intake. I 4 Barrel carb intake for a 4.0 is $$$$$

The waste gate he is using was on a civic running 12 psi. Might be a bit much but oh well.

What timing are you gonna start with? On Pain youll want more total timing.
I ran 14-14-14 42 degrees total timing on a NA SBC 383 with the 450 mixer. Not comparable to your motor but way more timing than stock.

The function of propane was fine but the PITA to fill tanks pushed me into an EFI swap. They wont fill tanks after dark, gas station guys take forever, the price around here went higher then gas and you use 20% more of it... lugging around 5 forklift tanks sucks for long trips.

Ive also had a gas station guy over fill my tanks. While working in the drive way and jeep out in the sun it blew off the pressure, a stream of LPG right were I was just working with the grinder. Dumped about 5 gals before the valve closed.

the timing is a bridge we will come to soon... in theory, more total timing and faster advance is needed for propane... i installed the lightest adv springs in the dist... the problem comes in with the turbo (at least on gas) you want to retard the timing as boost comes in.... i plan to start off with aprox. stockish timing and see how the vac advance responds to manifold pressure... i am sure ill need to bump it up more than that, but i shouldn't need as much total timing as a n/a motor, because hopefully the size turbo i have will spool quick enough to counteract the lack of timing

for the record, everything in the above statement is complete BS that i pulled out of my ass so feel free to add or criticize

as far as convenience goes, there is a bottle gas place here in town that does it w/o hassle
I have 4 alum tanks which are relatively easy to handle
I had 6 before when i had my yj and never used more than 2 in a full day of wheeling, and that was a 350 .060 over with flat tops running WAY too rich

Wow brain was roasted I missed the BBQ fuel part of that post. Sounds like it will be decent setup. Looking forward to some progress.

He tore into the front 44 and it indeed had cromo axles like the PO said. So he decided to give them some love. (they had spicer joints in them that were blown out)

the aforementioned spicers:

ate some Chinese yesterday

decided to spend some money to maybe save a life or two

here it is as it sits now...

oiling system is completely plumbed
exhaust is 90% done
boost tube is done
inlet side is 90% done

hoping to make a little noise by the weekend, still have a few things missing but most of the big stuff is there

im waiting on one rebuild kit for the ctm's then the 44 can be reassembled and the jeep will be at least mobile at that point

i had a moment yesterday when i just stepped back and thought to myself: "WTF was i thinking?!?!?!?"

it was discussed today that this whole thing shouldn't really work, but at the same time, we can't come up with any reason that it won't

Save yourself the headache and buy some of these:
Stainless Steel T-Bolt Hose Clamps : BoostController.com LLC - America's Source for High quality turbo boost controllers, silicone hose, and more performance products - 877-836-6155- precision boost control. Turbosmart Warehouse Distributor

I had a Mustang with a Vortech @ 12psi and it ate standard hose clamps for lunch. If it blows the boost pipe off, it wont run. The t-bolt clamps are well worth a few extra bucks.

I don't plan on running anywhere close to that much boost, I plan on making something more substantial in the future, for now its just a proof of concept
The boost tube coming appart will most likely save the motor
