Anyone convert a 4x2 to 4x4?
My buddy has a 1998 Cherokee that is a 2wd with 90k on the engine...solid body and good running engine...
Has anyone done this and how much of a pain is it, how much does it run and is it worth the money or should he look for a used 4x4? We have the know how and the tools just wondering if the parts would total up more than a reliable used 4x4? Thanks... |

Yeah, I did it, summer of '02 before I knew anything about wheeling.
It's easy if you have the parts, the time, and the money. "worth the money" obviously depends on how much your parts cost which varies greatly by region and condition. This is certainly not hardcore tech though.

i imagine all you would need is a dana 30 out of a 4wd Xj and 231J w/ shifter from a 4x4 XJ everything else should be there as far as the wiring harness i would think...if not grab that .....i would say at the cost of my pnp prices here where i live:
$200 for the front axle $40 for the front drive shaft $200 for the tcase (i think) and the misc. wiring probably around $500-600 i would think...

You'll need a new tranny, or at least the tailhousing and tailshaft from a 4wd tranny. The new tranny is definatly the better and less painful option IMO.

I did it about 5 years ago and it ended up costing over $1300 all said and done. Included tranny, tcase, driveshafts, both axles to match ratios, shifters and linkage, etc. Now I'd say that it's a good idea only if you're upgrading axles/tranny/tcase anyways when buying a cheaper 2wd version of the same vehicle for less money..

Maybe Lance could give TJP the power of being a mod. so he can move these things into the right part of the forum.

No, just welcome to the Cherokee forum. This the right part of the forum - doesn't Cherokee = Newbie?

Aside from the fact that you're wasting your breath? Not much. Not much at all.
