I just installed a snorkle on my 89. It's not carbed, but I don't understand why you think it will be any different. The snorkle doesn't tie directly into the throttlebody, it cuts into the existing airfilter housing. IIRC, the filter housing wasn't significantly changed when Jeep went to FI (but I COULD be wrong...) so the type of injection would not make a difference.
The only thing I can see being different is that the 4-banger has it's housing in a slightly different location. The flex-hose (connecting the formed snorkle body to the filter housing) would just have to route differently. Am I just way off-base? Or did you already modify the air filter of your rig?

Now, if you're running a stockish rig through, there are deep water areas on the Tahoe side this time of year that you might need a snorkel for. Rigs running snorkels in Australia and North Africa have the inlet as high as possible (at or above the roof line) to help with dust issues. Most of the dust issues are caused by groups of vehicles running in a packs. Moving the inlet to the back of the hood is only raising the inlet about 6 inches, which won't cut down on the amount of dust the inlet will encounter. FWIW, I've traveled to the Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Bolivia, and numerous other countries in Europe - I've never seen a snorkel on a vehicle. Even on the FJ-80 group I came across in Southern France going to Tunisia via ferry for rally trials didn't have one. I've seen a few here pounding pavement in Norcal ![]() ![]()

Uhh what the hell kind of a comment is that?!? You’re not that smart are you? I don’t know what you do for fun (drive around town
) but my buddies and I go on the Rubicon when we can but we mainly like to do trail runs. This means lots of Dust!Anyways...with the setup im thinking of it’s just to get it out of the way when I do a water crossing or when I go through a big puddle. The very beginning of the air intake is pretty much at the near the bottom of the grill. Jeep must not have been thinking clearly when they designed it. So the water gets sucked in pretty easily. Here let me tell you guys why im doing this. 2000 miles ago I bought a brand new Fram air filter. Just yesterday I checked it and it was caked with dirt and mud. That’s just in 2000 miles. I had to replace it since my gas mileage dropped! As for seeing other rigs with out snorkels, maybe they don’t have them cause they might not be a daily driver and really have no need for a snorkel. (Just a thought)

I notice your user title says that you are a NAXJA vice president. I also see from your profile that you are the wise old age of 23.
This surely must entitle you to decide what is gay and what is not on an XJ. You must also be the authority that decides how an XJ should be built. I don't write this because I have a snorkel on my XJ (I do not), but write this reply simply because I think you're an ass.
