Converting front xj d30 to 5 x 5.5

Is there a way to convert a d30 to 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern instead of 5 x 4.5 without using spacers?

Thanks,
Jack

Yep, the Warn hub conversion kit does that.

http://www.warn.com/truck/axles/hubconv_kit_5on5.shtml

It only costs about 10x as much as wheel spacers and still widens the axle a little on each side.

The kit also comes with 30 spline chromemoly stub axles, which are a considerable upgrade from the 23 spline stock stubs, and are stronger than chromo 19 spline D44 stubs. If you need 5 on 5.5, and are also putting in chromo inner axles, and don't mind spending that kind of money on a D30, then it's a pretty good upgrade. It also eliminates the unit bearing.

If you want cheap and easy, go with wheel spacers. Here is another option for you...http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...HybridAxle.htm

I hope you've never driven a Ford dually truck then.

Nope...I can safely say I have NEVER driven anything with wheel spacers.

put a dana 44 up there. what you would pay for shafts and hub conversions and all the B.S. you would damn near be at the same price but you would have a much better axle

thousands of people run them with no problems, its just like running a rim with less backspacing.

That is VERY debatable. A stock 44 isn't anything special.

What about 2005 or so grand cherokee hubs or even the whole axle? Some of them are 5 x 5.5 and have a separate tie rod and drag link setup getting rid of stupid Y setup that cherokees have they also moved the drag link 2 inches higher on the passenger side knuckle.

I think WJs are LP. Other than that, they've got dual piston brakes and bigger rotors.. but I thought their bolt pattern was 5 x 5.

Would it be possible to have a machine shop redrill the wheel or the wheel mounting surface to a different bolt pattern?

Thanks,
Jack

I don't think there is enough material on the hub flange to go to the bigger bolt spacing. If there was, there would be very little metal left on the edge of the wheel stud holes, so you would need to tap the holes and use screw in studs rather than press in. Folks have been going to 5 on 5.5 on the front to match new rear axles for a long time, if this was possible it would have come up before, and I've never heard of it being done.

CJ D30's are low pinion and passenger side drop.......if that works for you.

Get a CJ D30 for $50. Grind off inner C's on both axles and put CJ inner C's on XJ D30. Reassemble with CJ parts.

So, I have got one more option that I have been running around in my head. I have done a lot of measurements, and they seem to work, I just am having a hard time finding the parts to test fit.

So, try finding a set of knuckles off of a 1994 up Dodge 44. I believe they will fit the 30 inner C, with possibly a ball joint change. Then you will get bigger brakes, 5 x 5.5, way bigger unit bearing, and the 297 joint outer stub. Now if you don't have 297 joint inner shafts, you will have to get those, but other than that it should be and easy swap. But finding the parts seems to be a PITA. Every one I have found is far away from me and the JY's want some big bucks for them. You know there are guys out there throwing these out when they upgrade their trucks, I just haven't found them yet.

Just a though anyways, and it would be built with all stock components.
