1987 Cherokee

I'm looking at another 87 cherokee.

AutoTrans
4L I6

Told it runs but, I'm not counting on it. What years driveline will swap into this? Can you go back a few and use a 258-I6 with that trans?
Will a 2.5L 4cyl out of an 88 wrangler work with that trans?

If any of you know what engines and trans years and sizes will work, I'd apperciate it(again)

thanks

'87 is the first year of the 4.0L. Earlier jeep 258 motors and trannies won't interchange. '87 through '90 are Renix motors and anything 4.0 will interchange, motors and trannies. If the motor is bad, it shouldn't be hard to find a used 4.0L at a reasonable price. If it doesn't run the odds are it could still be something that's fixable without a new motor.

If the motor is crap, but it has good bracketry and accessories still, you could just pick up a new longblock. You can get them with some pretty good warranty's for only about $1300.

Your other choice is to just swap to another engine completely...but of course that is alot more work in terms of mating the electronics, the mounts, trans location, yada, yada, yada....

you "could" bolt up a 258 to the bellhousing, but I'm not sure about the torque converter.

The AW4 is an electronically controled trans, so if you swap anything other than a 4.0 in there you're going to have to accomodate the trans.
It either needs a TPS signal, or you'll have to control it standalone.
BrettM has a kit for standalone.

Why not just find a 4.0? They're cheap and plentiful, I've seen running examples go for $75.
