Intake manifold fittament... I fucked up.
What I want to do is put this:
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/P...Browse/s-10101 On a Renix 4.0. Now, it's ment for a up to 1980 258 out of a CJ. I'm not sure what the relevence of that is, did they change the head design at that point? How much did they change the head design when going from the 258 to the Renix EFI? The issuse I can think of is the power steering pump bracket, port shape and port height. I'd think everything else would be identical. And I think the port shape/height wasn't changed until the HO, but IDK. All I want is the mother to bolt up without any huge fuss. It will solve my wiring/fuel system problem. I'm trying to run propane, FWIW. No, not a carb. Last edited by DirtyComanche; 07-04-2007 at 07:04 PM. |

Wait, I'm an idiot, they have other models...
An 87-90 YJ uses the same head as a Renix, right? And they're drilled/tapped for a power steering pump bracket, IIRC... I think this one would work... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...P&autoview=sku But I've now read the the P/S brackets are very different so I might have issues there. Okay, I've got this figured out, almost.
The only thing I worry about is if I can re-use my P/S brackets with a YJ style intake manifold? Or will I have to fab new ones or find YJ ones (never seen a YJ with a serpentine belt)? I think I'm just going to order the manifold and see what happens. I need to make this work. |

The 258 head isn't the same as the 4.0 one. At least, AFAIK. But it is the same as far as the port pattern. Which is all I cared about. The HO head is different, but it can actually be used too (properly). Just a guy needs to go a little crazy with the die grinder on the ports/intake and clearance a few other things.
So, I know the manifold will fit. I don't know if the power steering will work though. Whatever, when it arrives I'll figure it out. |

Guess what? I really put my foot in my mouth with this one.
Had I gone out and bought two sets of intake/exhaust gaskets for the $3 they are each, I would have known that the 258 and 4.0l head are NOT the same regarding the ports. I fucked up good on this one. The ports don't align right. The renix 4.0l ones are higher than the 258 ones. By about oh, 3/8" maybe. I could raise the intake up and align the ports, though... But, can I? I'd need to either remove the alignment dowels for the intake, or cut out the holes for them in the head. I'm not sure if they are important to keeping the head in place correctly after the mounting bolts have been done up? If they are not important, I will cut them off. Because I have to make this work. The P/S would have worked. but it won't if I move the intake up. But I think I can massage the bolt holes to make it work. No biggy. |

pretty much all you have to do is take your grinder and make the little tab on the intake that fits over the dowel pin ,and round off the bottom so that the tab sits ablve the whole, rather than in the hole. a few years ago i modified an old iron 258 intake to fit a renix head for a stroker i wanted to build.there were some pics on a page on swapping a 4.0 head onto a 258,ill see if i can find them. im sure you realize that youll have to use a 4.0 header...

sorry,i couldnt find the pics. im pretty sure they were here:
http://monsterslayer.com/jeep/40Head/40Head.htm but when you try and go there now it gives you a "page not found" error. a google search for "4.0 head swap" turned up alot of stuff, but i didnt have time to look thru it all. at any rate, just make the bottom of the tabs round so that they sit on top of the dowels instead of in the holes. that all there is to it

Alrighty. Got it to fit. Thanks for telling me to look at it from that angle. I forgot that 4.2 guys swapped to 4.0 heads but didn't bother to swap in the EFI at the same time.
Took a little balls to cut up my brand new intake. But once I got over myself it was no biggy. I've modified more expensive parts that were brand new out of the box... |
