Well I have done some searching on several different threads and found nothing on the subject, so I decided to make my own thread. I bought my new wheeling project Monday and am in the process of hacking the back off. I found a 98 5.9L limited Grand Cherokee that had been rolled. The previous owner decided that he wanted to chop the top and make it a truck, so when he ran out of time and decided to sell it, it was well on its way to being a truck.
So I will start out with a few pics of the Grand when I got it. Also if anyone knows of any threads on the subject please post them, I am very curious. Also I need to give credit were credit is due. None of this would happen if it weren't for my friend Jon, who is doing all the welding and let me work on it at his place (since I have no welder, nor am I nearly as good of a welder).

A few links that I found. If anyone has any other than let me know so I can post them up.

Ahh...the Cheromanche, sort of. Looks like a good start. Keep chopping and welding.

Well, we got a little more done today. Finished welding the patch panels and got the tailgate all lined up. We welded a brace in behind the tailgate that it will bolt to and it will still latch at the bottom. It would've been welded in but it needs to come off so you can get to the tail lights.

Now it's time to do some grinding.

The windshield frame wasn't too much of a bi*** to get strait, after half an hour of beating it is really close to strait. As far as bracing I plan on connecting the roof to the back and building an x in there as well. There is a small brace in there right now but as soon as I get a chance to drive down to the steel store and pick up some tubing I will build the rest of the bracing. I will post pics when I get that done. I also plan on cutting the roof back to the window line.

I have searched Mallcrawlin, one good write up and a couple of good links but not too much. I wouldn't have done a writeup at all but I thought that the next person that tries searching can get one more writeup at least. As far as the interior, the previous owner removed it to work on the Jeep and I have put almost everything back in the Jeep. I still need front black leather limited seats if anyone has any:D Still need to put the headliner back in but want to finish the back first.

Made some more progress, decided that it had to be sealed off. I drive may too much on the street and any wheeling I do is more than three hours away so it has to be bearable. Bought some 16gauge sheet metal and made the plates. I am going to weld the bottom plate all the way to the tailgate and bolt the tailgate to the rest of the Jeep with a seal. Added a few braces out of angle iron and welded them to the top cover. The seats wit quite nicely without the headrests and even latch. I also decided not to go with a bed because I wanted to be able to sleep in the back of the jeep for winter wheeling trips. Grand Slam North West is coming up soon:D I plan on grinding the welds and painting the new pieces with some cheapo Omni single stage paint that I have laying around. Hope to be ble to do that by the nd of the week and get some more pics up.

you shoudl mount a third break light under the glass in the center. One of those thin strips of LEDs.

I want to mount a third brake light there. The headliner dips down for the sunroof motor so it made the perfect place for one. Plus that damn computer console screen thing in front of the shifter won't shut up about missing a tail bulb, so I have to do something. If that screen didn't have the time and the date I would just unplug the damn thing. :flipoff2:

I didn't accomplish anything welding the back cover on. I wanted more interior room and something that I could wheel. For other people they could keep that part open but I would prefer having a interior. Also the upper part of the Jeep that is missing is the part that I always seemed to come down on (around trees and rocks) when I was wheeling my XJ and now I won't have that problem. It may not be what most people would do but the only reason that I didn't just buy a new chunk of roof is that this is going to be a more hard core build, I would like to end up on 38" boggers like my XJ. I miss the ground clearance. We'll see.

The tailgate comes off but not super easy. Still trying to figure out a way to put a hinge on the tailgate but still get it to seal. But just folding down the back won't be much of a pain. Never seen another 93-95 with the heater controls with the digital display. News to me.
