newer models slower?
I test drove a 97 and a 98 jeep cherokee. They both had the 4.0L H.O. But for some reason the 97 was a lot faster. They both had about the same amount of miles on them. Was there a change in the engine or tranny between those years that would cause a loss of power?

Flame suit on....
I have always thought 91-95's were much faster than the newer ones. 98-99 they changed the head, power supposedly stayed the same... on paper. Could also be gearing. 3.73-3.55-3.07 etc... Last edited by 95steel; 12-05-2007 at 02:39 PM. Reason: speeling |

according to what i've read, the 91-96 head is the one everyone wants for HP. I also read that the later model 97-02 head creates more torque (and chryslers published numbers agree with that) and is more desireable when building a vehicle for offroad use.

The head switch over was in late 99, about the same time they put the larger intake manifold on them. It could have something to do with the spark plugs, air filter, etc. Its the little things that make performance happen, specially on a stock 4.0L.
