Pushing The Limits!

I started out with a 96 xj about a year ago. I bought it about stock it had a 2in block/spacer lift and 31s. The rig was in good condition and I was able to pick it up cheap. I wanted a little more and to keep up with some friends. So I used some parts I had around d44/d0 front crossover, high steer, detroit rear disc spool 4.56s, 37x12.50x17 and bead locks. I pulled out all of the links built some brackets and installed 2in wrangler leafs. It ended at a 4in lift so I needed to do some trimming and I needed sliders. I did some research and found it was time to do rocker replacement sliders. I cut 2in off the bottom of the doors installed the rocker but, there was still the clearance issue with the rear tires. So I decided to cut the back of the door off to match the bottom and open up the fender wells. this is what it turned out as in its first sage.

So now its time to get to the second stage. I bought a set of d60s out of a 82 dodge drw. The first i started with was narrowing the front housing, turning the knuckles, trussing and turning down the hubs

Then it was on to the front three link. I built plates to weld in the inner frame rails to mount the new crossmember. I built it so nothing would hang out of the frame. The only snag I had was the frame rails had to be trimmed to clear the lower links.

Next was the pan hard bar. It was a tight fit but worked out great with the steering angle. I did a 4inch stretch in the front I ended up having to move the steering box forward 2 1/2. I also had to mount the drag link from the bottom so It would clear the oil pan at full bump.

more pics and progress

I want to end up on 40-42s a lot more trimming needed to be done.

So now it was time to start building the cage. I was planing on building off rock sliders then I started to think I didn't want to regret not going all the way so I moved the sliders up for full boat sides. Then built some supports and started tubing.

What kind of T-case are you going to run with a pass drop front?

Info

I have a dana 300, twin sticks with clocking ring. As far as stiffeners go I could use some input. My plan was to use 1/8 sheet over the front of the rails under the hood after I tie in the rest of the cage for the shocks. I am already cutting the floor for the t-case, exhaust, boat sides and rear links so why not just raise the floor 2.5. Then I can clear it all with ease by running the stiffeners up to the new floor.

Pushing the limits of what you ask

I guess I should have said what the plan was with this build. I started out wanting a crawler then, a friend took me down to king of the hammers. So now I wanted it to have some speed to it to!
1. smooth belly pan
2. boat sides
3. big tires 40-44
4. low ride height 2-3(crawl)5-6 (dessert)
5. 14in ORIs up front
6. 16in ORIs in rear
7. 3-link front (3in stretch)
8. 4-link rear
9. caged
10. 60s f&r (shaved)
11. 7.17 gears f&r
12. ARBs f&r
13. hydro assist
14. 10in bob
15. keep a/c
16. dana 300 twin sticks clocked 4 to 1
17. rear disc
18. fuel cell
19. all four doors working
20. keep rear seat

Basically I want a xj that still looks like a xj but, is buggy capable. I own a body shop so Its kinda my thing to keep the body. finish it out and paint it. not that it will last

Hey nice build, looking good. I like how you welded up your pan-hard axle bracket to the differential housing, the boat sides and cage are looking killer as well. I have a lot of the same goals in mind with my build and similar part selections. I have the 6.17 gears for the dana 60's. Should match up well with 40" tires and still allow room for high speed stuff. The thing that worried me most though is the punee ass pinion. Something to keep in mind.

Yeah you might want to rethink those gears. The pinion is ridiculously small.

Why would you do a rear 60? Are you gonna bore it out to accept 35-spline shafts or just keep it D44 strength? Don't think it will hold up long in stock form on 40's. I'd do a D70U or 14B if it were me....

I just like the Idea of matching axles and having more options on gears. I have a 70 that I will run for now so I dont have to change gears. The plan is to build a far offset rear 35-spline to swich out later.

getting more done

I started out building some braces to hold the body square. Next it was time to do some more cutting. Removed both inner fenders and cut the body to clear some 44 Borrowed from a friend. Clean up the frame, weld the seam and tomorrow start on the frame stiffeners.

it'll be cheaper to build a 231/300 doubler than it will be to regear AND you'll be way lower...

i run an AW4, 231/300 doubler, and GM 60 front 70HD rear with 4.10 gears and im at 163:1

if you dont do a doubler and decide to regear to whatever, lets say 7.17 because those are the lowest you can get for MY axles.. im not sure about yours cuz i dont know what your running nor do i really care.. But an AW4, dana 300, and 7.17 gears will put you at 105:1 of which, like i said, will cost twice as much, introduce weak pinion issues, and not be as low as the doubler option..

I'm setting it up for two different ride heights. One for crawling and local trails this will be 2-3 of total lift with 3-4 of up travel. The other is for fire roads, dessert higher speed stuff. It will be around 6 of lift with 7 up travel. The valving would be set up at 6 up 8 down in the front and 7 up 9 down in rear. I was talking to the goat man with team naxja who is a dealer for ORI and he has a KOH buggy that is similar setup. He suggested this and said It works great going fast and it was a little stiffer running it at a lower ride height and leaving the valving alone but it performed great. I could use some more input on this before I make a commitment.
