hey all, MY clutch went out on my 1989 MJ with a 4.0 and the AX tranny (not the peugot). I need to have my truck by tomorrow, what needs to be done to drop the transmission/tc?

On the XJ/MJ it is actually quite a bit easier to pull the two as a unit. One guy can do it with a tranny jack, two strong guys with a floor jack if they have little to no fear. You can not tilt that prick down good enough to get to the top bolts on the t-case good. I puill them as one, it seems easier to me. Also, be care full tilting the motor, it will put the fan in the radiator and bust the shroud. Also, the top bellhousing bolt is often times a od size twelve point or a inverted torx, I forget which, I do however know that if you use one on the other it will lead to issues. I rep[laced mine and every one I have done wiht a normal bolt.

yeah yeah yeah, I'm a newbie, so what? I jsut got sick and tired of the same old BS q's at JU and decided to learn from those who really know their shit...
I pulled 7 inches simply in the mounts I used, that and the springs on my mj are fairly new. When I go to a bronco 44 front I will need to buggy leaf and shackle the rear....I HATE blocks, too much wrap. Thanks all for the quick responses....is there any easy way to get those bolts near the top?

I used a long extension and a universal joint to get them. I *think* they may be easy to get from the top through the engine compartment but I forget, it has been a long time since I did one on a stock trans.
I just used a stock XJ rear for my SOA, that is why you got more. I'm pretty happy with the short MJ, at 5" with the trimming I did I should fit a 35" plus easy.

hell, I had room for 36's if I want em,
unfortunately I know that the 35 rear and 30 front wouldn't last too long..... <img src=http://www.autocolorado.com/Owners_Pictures/Select_a_Page_of_the_Gallery/Jeep_Gallery_Page_One/Picture_40/MVC-040S.JPG>

I pulled the t-case off my wife's Cherokee first 'cause I got nobody to help me (snif). The engine tilted far enough back for me to get to the top bolts on the t-case. Unfortunately, somebody had been there before me (top bolts on bellhousing) and I ended up hammering a smaller socket on and hooking up a 3 foot extension and u-joint with an impact wrench (LUVLY!)

Hey, all.......I can't get at those top two external torx bolts......what's the secret here?
should I jack the t-case down in order to fit in from underneath? will this stress anything terribly immportant (I know to watch the fan and radiator...) I found teh right size socket but it is too big to fit in the space...

OH!, I almost forgot, the one under the hood is the splash sheild, it has to bolts that go into the bell housing from the front. The drivers one is less then fun to get to but not to bad.
I like the MJ! Mine is cut a bit more severe, it had some rust issues to work around. This is the final ride hieght with the motor inand my 31's on it: Check out the rest of the pics @ Webshots [ 08-15-2001: Message edited by: DUG ] [ 08-15-2001: Message edited by: DUG ] ![]() [ 08-15-2001: Message edited by: DUG ]
