I am getting all the parts together for my IH D44 rear/SOA swap into my 78 CJ5 with stock springs. Upon inspection of the pass side front spring hanger location, the U-bolt is onto the diff. Will there be any grinding required to fit the spring perch? I see that MORE has offset D30 spring perches for the YJ, will they also take care of this CJ problem?
Secondly, all of MORE spring perches are 2.5" wide, will they work with my front 2" wide stock springs? (this further agravates the first problem) I really like the MORE perches and plan on moving my rear axle back. Let me know your thoughts. [ 08-27-2001: Message edited by: Archie_G ]

I had to grind the housing a little to get the u-bolt to seat, but I didn't use the MORE perches. I made some using 2" square tubing.

I'd have to say us IH guys are the kings of SOA's, number one conversion for the Scouts is SOA. I'm still running SUA due to the expense and time to a SOA correctly. Why use a 30, if you are going to go through the expense of an SOA, at least use a 44. An IH 44 should be easy to find since you already have the IH 44 rear. You can use Chebie parts to convert the disk brake stuff. You will also want to cut and turn the knuckles. The Scout 44's require a lot of grinding to to create the SOA spring pad, or you can use a full width HD44 setup for SOA and narrow. Come over to IH board and well set you straight.

Just did one last weekend. No the 2.5" perches won't work in the front, it will NOT let the spring to be clamped correctly (very important in the front!!!). I used spring perches from Rubicon Express (2.5" in the rear, 2" in the front) There is no grinding needed on the front housing. Just weld, bolt, and go! Contact them, they have them in stock ready to go.
Hope this helps. Also, when flipping the sping plates the drivers stays on the drivers, and vice versa (due to one larger u-bolt on the pass. side) I had to cut off the sway-bar mounts and make new ones with grade 8 bolts and a section of round tubing. Have Fun! <IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0">
