Yes it works, you can also drop in the planetary gear set for a stronger low range

The chain from an NP241 will not just drop into an NP231 case. You'd have to shorten it, and then to take full advantage, get the gears out of an NP231HD. You're better off getting the chain and gears straight from the NP231HD, which can be found under full-size Dodges. The case itself isn't large enough to fit the gears from an NP241 (the ones that the chain rides on).

The chain in a regular NP231 is an inch wide. The chain in the NP231HD and in the NP241 is 1.25" wide. With an I-6 stroker, dual T-cases, and 36" swampers, I never broke a stock, 1" wide NP231 chain.

The NP241 rear output shaft will fit into an NP231 'case with the right tailshaft housing parts. I did this. The NP241 planetary set will also fit into the NP231, provided you get compatible years (gear pitch changed on the planetaries more than once).

The JB kit uses a modified output shaft from the NP231HD...

I'm reminded of that "polishing a turd" saying... <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

Converting to the wider chain is not just to prevent chain breakage, but to prevent much more common stretching of the chain. High mieage NP231 chains have been known to stretch and rub on the bottom of the case, wearing right through it.
The 231 is not as breakage prone as other "polished turds" found on the YJs(D35,30, puegeot trannies). If gearing is not an issue on a trail or mud vehicle, a SYE and bigger chain are good insurance. And much cheaper than an Atlas.
But if you get into gearing a 231, forget it.
Go Atlas.
