232 vs. 258

What are the differences visually between a 232 and a 258? Are there different casting numbers?

the easiest way would probably be to look at the intake/carb. THe 232 is 1bbl and the 258 is 2bbl except for the really early ones in SJs.

Do you know what year and vehicle it's out of?

'74 came with both types of I-6's, both were 1-bbl.

Look on the machined pad right where the head and the block meet on the passenger side. There should be a 6 digit number.

If it starts with an A then it is a 258, if it starts with an E it is a 232.

Ummm, no. The one barrel was the only carb available through at least '75 in CJ's with either the 232 or 258. A friend has a '78 258 with the one barrel also.

KnetAZ has the correct answer.

Well then I stand corrected, all the 232s I've seen are 1 barrel, all the 258s were 2 barrel.
