V-8's actually fit really nice, I wouldnt start with an XJ as a project vehicle however. But what ever floats your boat.

What year 4 liter?

The really early ones (pre 87?) have a different fire wall that causes some problems. But even that can be overcome. There is a guy local that has a chevy 305 in his.

NAXJA is your best source for all things XJ

I wouldn't recommend an LT-1 into a Jeep, or any vehicle that could see water splashing into the engine compartment.

This is because the LT-1 uses an optispark ignition system that is a big placenta-looking "distributor" mounted directly to the engine behind and below the water pump. These are very susceptible to moisture and other contaminants in the engine bay (there is actually a note to NOT pressure wash a vette engine due to this part).
The early one's had a sealed system that wasn't too well sealed and was problematic from the start. Later on they put a vent and drain in, but that didn't work worth a crap either.

To change these things out is not something I would want to do on the trail, and they are almost too expensive to be carrying a spare around anyway.

Sorry to be the voice of warning, but I don't want a fellow Jeeper stuck on the trail for something like this.

There are a couple of XJ's out there that have an LT-1. I saw one from the SF Bay area that had one and it was a sweet swap.

You may want to consider trading your LT-1 for another engine. I have some recommendations, but don't know about how much money you want to spend.

There are ways to remove the high-voltage from the opti.

Also, you can remove the opti and install HEI distributor
