Outer knuckle u-joint problems
I've got a bad half shaft on my front axle. I've got a ford 9" w/31 spline inters and 28 spline outers. I'm going to change the outers shafts to larger ones soon but untill then I'm planning on welding the caps to the half shaft. I know the heat is going to damage the inside of the cap and reduce the life of the u-joint but I only need a couple of trips before I get the new axle shafts.
I'm going to use a cutoff wheel to slightly notch the ear and the cap then tack weld the cap in place. Anything I missing with this plan? This is what I'm having a problem with. |

If you have a Dremel tool or other small die grinder, I would recommend notching out the yoke for full-circle clips. I have tried welding the caps, and I (currently) run full circle clips (stock shafts/760X joints). The welds just seem to weaken everything, I only got 2 trips with welded caps. With full-circle clips, I have 3 trips now and not a single cap has even spun on me.

That aggravates the crap out of me. I guess i'm doing something wrong on attaching the pic to the post. I guess I need to go back to the newbie catagories.
Why is it that some people can see it and others can't!!! |
