I recently (last week) had my tranny (auto) rebuilt and I noticed a bunch of heat coming from the floor board. At first I was concerned it was the tranny. I now think its the transfer case. I opened the filler hole concerned they may not have filled the unit and plenty of fluid came out but it was already turning brown. The ATF is less than a week old.
What could cause this much heat? I dont think my bearings are bad. There are no noises and the transfer case shifts fine.

I have found most of the extra heat under my YJ to be from the catalytic converter. A couple of sheet metal heat shields really did the trick.
