89 Wrangler won't shift into 4x4
A buddy of mine just got an 89 Wrangler. We took it fourwheeling @ LBL, and it did fine, other than a small carb issue. Now however, he can't get it into 4 wheel drive, the lever will not shift, and makes a good bit of noise if you try. Auto hubs and the NP231. Anybody got any tips?
Thanks, Michael

I shoulda said I already searched, and first thing we did was check the linkage. Never piss upwind, but might up a rope.

My Wrangler has an auto trans. Before I got the tranny rebuilt I had to shut off the engine and put the tranny in neutral to shift into and out of 4 LO.

Pull the t-case, inspect and re-build. It is pretty easy to do. If the case was ever run dry the plastic pads on the mode and shifter forks wear out and the chain stretches. This will cause problems. Also, I have seen the spring clips that hold together the shift mode syncronizer fail and this will not allow shifting into 4 wd. Open up a Quadratec or 4 Wheel drive Hardware catalog to get an expanded veiw of the t-case.
BTW, if pulling the t-case and rebuilding it seems too difficult for you then you are probably posting in the wrong forum.
