diesel in a YJ????

so what would it take to put a diesel in a YJ? i did some searching and no one has posted about it. just curious if it's even possible. with rising gas prices, a diesel would be nice.

Nope

Definatly not possible. I wouldn't suggest it at all. I think it's actually kinda silly.

Yes, it is possible, it's not like swapping in a chevy 350, it isn't bolt up, and will require welding and modification.

Apparently, there is a 4 cyl diesel version of the Liberty coming out next year. You might see if you could find any info from there. That doesnt really help you right now, but if you were thinking of doing it in a year or two, might be a possibility.

this subject has been talked about you should search harder. Also, from what i remember, it was concluded that a diesel would wieght too much to swap in and that if you found a small one you could forget about driving at speeds above 50. There are just better options for torque and horsepower. Just my .02

Wow you guys really nailed it.

I got my diesel engine transmission and transfer case for $700. It doesn't weight a ton, yes it does weight more than your stock engine. But it gives you power where you need it, at the bottom of the RPM's.

Speeds above 50? I can easily hit 65-70, and that is with 101hp, 33x12.5 BFG MT's, 4.10 gears, and a 1 to 1 output on the transmission. If I had an overdrive, higher speeds would be no problem. I just don't have the time or money do put in an overdrive.

It is not a swap that is out of the question. I think it's a great one, I can go places much easier than a lot of guys with gas since I just idle up with tons of torque.

If you want more information about diesels in SUV's check outBinder Bulletin

Just don't tell them that you are going to put anything in a jeep. They don't like jeeps at all.

Well I'm quite happy with mine. It's not going to win any drag races but it'll last forever and take whatever beating I can give it.

And it is so big you would not be able to drive it. I have one in my 91 dodge and I have to replace the front springs every couple of years with only HWY driving.

What was the donor vehicle? What all was involved in the conversion?

This is the 2nd one I did, so I took the easy way out. The donor was an International Scout 1980. I took the whole drive train, engine, transmission, and transfer case and just slipped it into the jeep. Put in new drive shafts, motor mounts, and a custom skid plate, and other odds and ends.

The other jeep I did, I don't have any pics of is a 236 Perkins Diesel. That engine was out of a street sweeper, and I had to customise the bellhousing, hooked it up to an F-150 transmisson/transfer case. It was my first swap, and so it took a lot more work, and didn't turn out as well.

I have considered once I graduate college opening a shop in Delaware to do Diesel Jeep conversions. I think if I can get it started there will be a market for it.

Both jeeps get 20-25 mpg with 33" tires.

I would imagine the YJ engine bay isn't quite big enough for a CTD, fan and radiator.

The 4bt Cummins I put in my '91 YJ runs great. It won't run with a stroker v-8 but it'll put a 4.0 ho on the trailer, you could say it smokes 'em. Stock ratings are 105 hp, and 325 lb/ft torque. Its tweaked in a few ways to probably around 170 hp and 500 lb/ft torque. Decent power in a yj. It works great offroad with too much low end power, the stock axles didn't stand a chance. At idle if a tire didn't slip on a climb it would simply just snap the axleshaft like a twig. On the street the Jeep is way more fun to drive. The torque of the motor pushes the box shaped Jeep pretty well at any speed, I've had it around 95-100 mph with a little speed left to go if you felt like pushing it further. I was running a nv4500 from a '98 dodge. Worked fine but I just switched to a 727 auto. Haven't driven it with the auto yet.
As far as weight goes, the 4bt weighs just a little more than a straight 6 or v-8. I noticed no difference in front end ride height over the factory 4.0. I would definitly swap another, if not for the more power, but it gets well over 20 mpg also.

You're right about the market for it, but I bet that market would be bigger on the west coast.

The 4bt came out of a Frito Lay truck. They are used in just about anything, trucks, tractors, hoes, you name it.

a few years ago there was a YJ at the Run-A-Muck event held in July just outside of Truckee. I dont remember his name I just remember he stuffed a CTD or a CAAT under the hood. He had louvered the hood and also had a few scoops to try to keep it cool. He said he would get 20+ mpg at 70+ no problem. It is possible just a little more work.
