That looks damn good! I am in the process of repairing and painting my CJ body. I started with a little more rust:

Thats when he bondo'd and sanded down to bare metal. That would remove the factory basecoat.

Good writeup....trail rigs need protection too....it is not about "looking" good but keeping her safe from the elements. More so in those states that have "moist" elements to deal with.

Hi, from the second post, I used mainly 120 grit, all over, but harder or thinner depending of if the areas needed more sanding.

Good luck!

Possibly starting another paint job in the next month, still have green od color, very tempting, nbut may be time to do some other color, any suggestions? Was thinking possibly Osha Orange, maybe another military color Navy? Desert? any suggestions? Rig will be a TJ, most likely extended wheelbase a la Unlimited style, or heck, keep it short wheelbase for a while, depending on after Xmas damage on my budget

Labia pink is a (C) color from Keith Strong, would have to get it licensed, etc, too much hassle.. I may just use up the OD green I have....

Now, with only 12 cans are you able to cover an entire jeep with all the body on it... I'm wanting to paint my CJ7 soon as the bodywork is done but I was expecting to need about 20 cans. They are regular sized cans too.

Just a thought let me know what you think. Did you have any cans you didnt use or use up? I know you went by chaning them around, why is this? To mix the paints possible batch variations or just so you dont use the can?

Thanks pm me if you need. I might post a paint kind of post about mine if you dont care, but not an step by step instruction set more like a build thread.

12 cans were enough for my rig, I think you coudl get away with less, but 12 gives you plenty of coverage andextra coats. I mixed the batch of cans when I could, just in case one of them was too different. The paint has survived excellent so far. I did not use the cans up to the end since they tend to sputter in the end, and saved those for areas like under the fenders and rocker guards where the paint would not be seen.

The Mil type paint looks cool in the pics... I used flat black on a few misc parts of my jeep and the smallest tree branch rubs tend to leave scratches. Does the semi-gloss OD hold up OK in an instance such as the one mentioned above - or did you have to spray clear over it so you don't get pin striping?

The OD is holding up surprisingly well, and it has been through branches, etc, even bent the front fender lip and bent it back and did not crack, etc. I think Aervoe's paint kicks butt, and has been resisting veryu well. I bought another couple boxes, so may be doing another TJ green as well

I'll be using paint that has metel flake in it, which I'd basicly just call glitter that didn't look like fairy shit, and you can't sand it. After I use it, I wanted to clear coat it and use hand glaze and rubbing compound on it to give it a wet shine instead of a flat spraycan paint job. I think I can do it, already testing out areas on the jeep and other metel. A lot of the shine comes out of how flat the surface is. Sad thing is, the paint is white and its hard to tell so I had to put a small amount of primer on the surface, sand it off and bondo over the areas marked.

What do you think?

I think if you are trying in some parts it is a good start. Really depends on how you will use the rig, I personally think shiny white will get bashed up for what I do, and also scratched up, so think long arnd hard before you go deeper in this

Since mine is more of a resto-mod, I went with a satin base that was close to an orginal '53 Willys color, and I did go with 3 coats of clear on top of that, wetsanding with 1500 between coats, but other than that, pretty much followed the steps you laid out. I'm pretty amazed the paint job I did came from $3 cans!

Anyway, thanks again. All that's left is wiring and plumbing and it should be ready to go.

Here are a few pics...

Wow, Excellent Job, came out extremely well!

I sent that PM to Gui with those pics to thank him for taking the time to put the write-up together. Because mine's going to be a resto-mod/Class VI light wheeler, I decided I wanted a gloss that should still be easy to touch up. The Moss Green is pretty close to the '53 Willys color I was going to pick, Willow Green Poly. He asked me to follow up with a little more info.

The primer was Rustoleum Automotive Primer
The paint was Rustoleum American Accents Moss Green Satin
The clear was Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel

The progression I used was:
120
320
Primer
320
600
Paint
600
Paint
600 wet
1000 wet
Paint
1000 wet
1500 wet
Clear
1500 wet
Clear
1500 wet
Clear

The total was 4 cans of primer, 13 cans of paint and 7 cans of clear. I probably could've gotten away with 2 coats of paint, and 2 coats of clear, but I bought enough to do 3 ahead of time, and just kept going.

I know it was probably overboard for a rattle-can job, but it came together very well. There are just a few spots that could've used a little more prep, but it's easily a 5' job. I'm not sure I could've done better with automotive paint and a gun considering it was my first time painting.

Anyway, I have no doubt anyone following the steps in this thread can put together a paint job that will surprise people.
