Maybe you guys have some answers

Posted on newbie and got no answers. Searched and got a few ideas, but no definate answers. 82 cl7, 6cyl, howel EFI, 3000 miles on engine(since 2000).
Put napa water pump on 3 months ago just for maintinance. I think I drove it a few miles afterwards. This past week started jeep, heard pinging, 4 minutes later top of rad(neck an rad cap) blew off.

Ive since put on 4core rad, coolant filter, new hoses, and removed thermostat. I dont see any flow in top of rad. I put a drop of food color to see flow and it goes slowly to the pass side of rad. I put my finger in top an felt water get hotter. I opened different spots in cooling system and blew an air hose in, all openings I picked blew water and coolant freely. Coolant filter has inlet facing thermostat side and outlet facing rad side.

I start engine with top rad hose disconected at rad and expected coolant to shoot out, didnt happen. I can only guess I got a bad new(not rebuilt) water pump, or possibly the wrong fan on water pump?. I watch temp guage all the time(even when top blew off) so I dont think its a head gasket. Top blew and temp was 165 on 2 different guages. Dont know what I left out from newbie post, I dont think i forgot any thing. Any answers to these questions or any other suggestions:

Any combonation of hoses I can blow out to check for or clear clogs.
Should coolant shoot out of top hose when disconected at rad and engine running?
Any other way to check for flow.
Any help please. Thanks in ahead of time

I see in there you removed t-stat. Was the T-stat removed when you expected coolant out the top radiator hose. If was removed yes it should shoot out pretty good when disconnected. If had T-stat in wouldn't let much if any out till at opening temp. Your top blew off the radiator at 165 deg.? The whole neck or what, was it pretty corroded? Are you able to put a pressure gauge on the coolant system to check it's pressure from cold to opperating temp, also with load?

Did you compare the old WP to the new WP?? You may have a reverse rotation WP that was made for a serpentine setup..

Thermostat was out I think, did it so many diff ways that I cant remember. I ll check into renting a pressure guage, sounds like a good idea to me. Last thing I want is to blow this rad up. First one I got from napa looked good, I put it on and pulley rubbed. brought it back and got this one. I paid so much attention to the pulley rub that I didnt check if it was stamped with the R or if fan was facing the correct way. Guess im pullin all that shit out. Even if it was my worst case scenario (Head gasket I beleive) wouldnt my water pump still pump? Im hoping its just the water pump. Thanks for the replies, any suggestions before I pull WP tomorro would be great. Thanks again

Take em the receipt for your new rad, their wrong part blew it right, make em pay for their fuck ups.

edit: Probably wont get shit from em, but being a complete asshole in their store will make you feel a bit better about the whole deal.

Call Bob Summerlin at Genuine Parts Company in Atlanta. GPC owns Napa, Motion Industries and a slew of other small companies. Bob is the president. Tell him how shitty the service is and that you want the situation rectified. He is (or used to be) very customer oriented. Tell him what the regional rep said to you. I fell pretty sure he will at least dish out an ass chewing.

Just a word of advise from an old fart. Being mad is great but getting compensated is better. Don't just rant. You need to figure out what you want out of the situation. Do you want a fixed amount of $$$, or replacement parts, or refunds? the best thing you can do is to tell them that you want to be reasonable but this is what you think is fair. Tell them the specific details of what you want. If you outline to them a solution instead of a vague claim and a bunch of anger, they will most likely meet your request. Their biggest problem is not knowing what to do. Make it easy for them, tell them.

You would be surprised how it works. They don't want to admit any liability to an open ended claim. Tell them you will provide them a liability release if they meet your terms. That is a clean way out for them. You don't have to threaten them.

For instance, I bought a humidifier and filled it up before I went to bed. It had a crack and leaked all over my hardwood floors, ruining the finish. I walked in to talk to the manager with three quotes on fixing it. He made a call to the district manager and I had a check and replacement humidifier the next day. They have insurance for things like this. Give them enough documentation that they can file their paperwork and they will love you.

NAPA actually replaced a long block for me and paid the labor, but I had a certified dealer mechanic do the inspection and provide a writeup and pictures. That is all they wanted, documentation.

LOL
