There was switchover on the YJ's on model year '94. They went to a smaller "hub" (it's really the side gears inside the diff) in '94. 94+ YJ's and all TJ's (as far as I know) have the smaller "hub". So I don't really have a good answer since you have a ZJ, but I'd tend to believe that the size would be the same as the YJ's of that era.
Why waste $$$ on a D35? If you want a cheap fix, weld the thing and run it 'til she breaks, and upgrade to a more serious axle. JP |

i welded mine... just in between the teeth, definately dont do that. it put too much stress on the cross pin and it exploded my carrier!
i did it jsut between the teeth so the would bind and i could take them out if i didnt like it. well i liked them but they didnt like me. never lost a shaft though. learn from me. leave the damn d35 stock till you can replace it.

Some of the innards(carrier and side gears) of the D35 changed with the advent of ABS. Sometime in 93 they started making D35's with the ABS innards irregardless of whether or not the Jeep was equipped with ABS. 94 and up all had the ABS capable innards and some 93 6 cylinders had the ABS innards. If you have the axle BOM you can call Tractech and they can tell you if the locker out of the TJ will work. If your ZJ has ABS then it will work.

I ran a D35 with a EZ-locker and it went on about 4 rubicon trips untill the locker broke, after that I welded the rear spiders into a ball and it worked fine for about 6 mo untill the welded spiders blew apart (no pre-post heat...Oops) and then I put in plain old spiders back in.
I never broke a shaft on the 35 though, even pulling a trailer through the con both ways. I think the EZ-lockers are shit, I went through 3 front ones and one rear in a few months on my 30/35 with lil 33's. If its only $50 id run it till something breaks though

for 50 bucks, Id lock it up.. if you think upgrading to a stronger rear axle for 2-300 is going to happen.. you gotta live in a dream land.. I swung an 8.8 under mine for about 400 bucks when it was all said and done, and I got the actual axle, wiht 4.56 gears and a trac loc for free, so I haven't even put a locker in yet...

Like others have said, keep the dana 35 open and spend that $50 on the ford 8.8 and weld the axle tubes to the diff so it doesn't spin. The dana 35 will not hold up long with 33's and a locker. At least get some spare shafts for next to nothing if you don't want to get the ford 8.8 or xj dana 44.
