ok well the cj project went from "just make it run" to "make it a beast"
here is the deal instead of spending 2k+ on fuel injection and whatever else needed for the 258 we are going to swap the engine and tranny. i need to find a decent chevy v8 with fuel injection and a tranny. any recomendations? This is goin into my 85 cj7

I don't see a consesus yet
An auto swap is not too difficult, just an adapter for the t-case, and linkage for the throttle input. A cooler. A floor mounted shifter would be easiest.

No no no... Don't find a small block chevy and PUT EFI on it. Get yourelf a 87-95 TBI 350. They're a dime a dozen. Plug n play. Ready to rock. And fock the auto. Any SM420 will bolt right up. Throw and adaptor on your 300 (Novak or AA) buddah bing buddah boom, turn key, have fun.

He got his out of a delivery van. Those are cool because they probably haven't been beat to shit and it was a low mileage motor on top of that. I wouldn't buy one with more than about 50K miles on it, unless you want to rebuild it in the near future. The only problem with the one out of the van is that it was backed by an auto. Lop sent his computer chip down to (escapes me right now) and they reprogrammed it for the manual. CA insisted that he have different exhaust manifolds as well. He was able to get those through the dismantler as part of the "deal" though. |

when i said insane projects i mean when i start planning anything its always a hell of alot more complicated or excessive then it needs to be.
like for instance im swapping my engine too.(not right this minute) instead of something like a 350 or something i bought a 400 out of a drag car. yeah i know you guys are major bad asses with all your stuff but im wierd in my own short yellow buss special way im going to ask the guys at the yard today when i pick up the tub for the cj. |

Sorry, I'm late on the draw. Putz is about right though. Mine came out of a conversion van. Ya know, one of those van conversions you see whole families of Mexicans in? (I love the Mexican people) hehe. It had 38k on the odometer and I fired it up in the van before I bought it (secretly put a scratch on the head in hiden spot so they would'nt pass another high milage motor on me ) No ball on the bumper nor a receiver for one (this thing was a grocery getter at best) I scored.
For $1500 cash, I got everything. Bellhousing, belts, hoses, all smog shit, air cleaner, fan, shroud, maifolds etc etc. They gave me a flywheel and an air pump and the right air feed manifolds too for smog. Got the conversion chips from Howell along with the harness (the chips simply pull out and ya push the new one's in, this converts the Auto computer to a manual computer). It was easy. Get yourself some motor mounts and adaptors for the running gear and your golden.

Alan, do it right, Ford Mustang 302, with Ford AOD w/low gear kit from Ford Motorsport, 4.11s and low TC gearing of your choice(watch the engine baking).

ok here is what i found out....
talked with a guy at the shop who also works for a bread company. The owner has a cube truck that 2 years ago they put in a brand new 350 tbi Jasper motor in. about a month later (and 3k miles) they tranny went up. It has been sitting there ever since. The guy evidently wants it the hell outa there. So we are going to try and buy the whole deal from him. Its got a 350 auto in it that i can have rebuilt for 3-400 bucks. It has an RV cam in it which means its basicly set up all torque. The guy i know drove it several times and would do hole shots (IN A CUBE TRUCK !!!!! ) he says it will come up outa the hole without a problem. If i can get the whole truck we will have everything minus the pidly shit. |

I've got a 350TPI w/ a 700R4. That puppy was free!!! My nieghbor sold me her '85 Vette for $2000., I'm gonna part that jewel out(or maybe sell it complete, it's got a clean title and the body is straight) and cull the engine and tranny (and the IRS, for a '32 Ford project) for a future CJ8 build.

383 is a sweet motor. Easy to build and parts are cheap. That's a 400 crank in a 350 block, right?
Whatever you do, I'd use a Chevy motor. There are tons of parts out there and they're cheap. The only reason to use anything else would be to be unique and IMO it's not worth the money. I think a big block is overkill in a Jeep. It's a Jeep, not a dragster or a hot rod. If I got my hands on a BB it would be going in the ford vicky that's in my garage. Now if you had access to a big block nice and cheap, well, then that's another story.
