Will a '96 AW4 fit a '97 4.0L?
I have a 1997 4.0L out of a XJ in my CJ mated to the stock TF999. I want to replace the TF999 with a AW4 to get an overdrive, etc. There is a local guy selling a '96 AW4 out of a XJ for $450 with TCU. Is this compatable with my 97 4.0L?
Thanks, Jason

http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/aw-4/aw-4-1.htm Good link for AW4 swap info
nope it wont work 97 they changed the connectors on the Aw4. I'm a in the prosses of swaping one in to my YJ and got a AW4 from a 93 XJ and got a 99 Xj wire harness connectors are diffent. but if you have a factory survice manuel and cut the wire and wire it in that way then it could work. Another thing make sure you have the connector for the TCU 87-96 was a 32 pin and 97-01 is a 26 pin. Last edited by ksejeeper; 05-15-2006 at 03:24 PM. |

I just got done swapping in a '91 AW4 into my '93 YJ which came factory with a 999.
Not sure if it will help much with your application, but it might. You can read up on my swap here: http://www.jeepin.net/forum/showthre...t=27473&page=8 Tranny wiring stuff starts about halfway down that page. Also, I documented my wiring in a complete list. You can see that here: http://www.phatserver.net/temp/YJ_WiringList.xls

It can be made to work, it may only need a few wires spliced over, but some people have had to change the speed sensor in the tranny. or the electronically easiest way it to change it to manual only control (link in sig)

Do you have a check engine light and does it work?
I do know that '97 AW-4's and '97 TCU's are not interchangable with any other years, so if you have a '97 tranny you need a '97 TCU. I don't know if another year will work with your engine if you change both the tranny and TCU at the same time. If you have the correct connectors on the harness already you could just hook it up and see if it works and if not you could cut out the connectors needed and splice it in like those of us who have installed an AW-4 into a TJ.

Come over and drive mine. We had all the wiring in place for the 97 swap. I just didn't think i had it right so we went with the 99 AW4 and TCU. After doing that swap I am certain I had the 97 wiring correct.
