If I buy a set of 1 ton axles (junkyard) and have tham narrowed to TJ width and have all the brackets installed on them ready to bolt to the jeep what will the end price most likely be? Anybody done this?
I am kida curious of the price estimate myself. The only info I have for you is to get FFs, that way the splines can be kept intact and the other sides are the ones getting shortened??
Drivetrain Direct has prices on their add in 4wheeler and it lists a terra 60 with axles, disks brakes, gears of your choice, and a detroit locker for $4000, with an ARB for $4250, or an OX for $4350.
Now I do know a fair amount about building axles so here would be some aprox. prices. A newer 60 with 1.6" id spindles would be $100, narrow it $250, axles because they can't be resplined are $325, if you cut it down to fit 2 short side 70 axles then they $20ea, a locker $450-650, gears $180, instal kit $100, R&P setup $150-250, brakes $250, spring pads $20. I think that about covers it. Total $1500-3000 and that is a standard 60 not an RC60.
I think your'e looking at between $2k-3K to get a running front TJ axle, bare minimum, asssuming you can find someone willing to do that kind of work for you.
there's a guy in Mass. who can get you a pair of axles for about $1200-ish, depending on the set. Check the for sale board, I've seen his name pop up there a few times.
Between gearing. lockers and service items like bearings, seals, and joints, figure another $1500. Cuttin the axle sshouldn't run moew than $300 each, and figure the same for labor to install the brackets. I understand the big tube brackets for TJ's are awfully pricey. might be time to consider leaf spings int he back of the TJ
