Post waggy axles on cj5

I did a search and didn't come up with the exact answer to my question so I will throw it out there.

first I am working with an 81 cj5 with amc20 rear (2.73) two piece axles and a dana 30 front. Both of these are narrow track.

I have a lead on some 76 waggy dana 44's and Id like to sling them under the 5.

What is involved in doing this? My list so far is different rims (6 lug) and outboarding spring hangers in front and changing spring perches in back. The 5 is SO so the rear axle is no problem.

Are all the ujoints the same (on the driveshaft)? Are these to wide for a 5 (59" rear 61" front).

Is this even a decent upgrade / good idea? Probably won't run anything larger than 33's for awhile. I figure it is good deal on the gear ratio change itself and getting rid of the 2-piece axles.

Hell yeah! Perfect I say. You will be hanging out a bit so depending on the attitudes of your local constibulary, ya may want to come up with some removable flairs to slap on just for the street. I think those axles would look sick on your 5.

On the driveshaft ujoints, the 44's are likely to have 1310's so they may match right up. If not, who cares. Swap yolks or just do some conversion ujoints. The price to do that will not be prohibitive for what your gunna get.

And my recomendation is not to run conversion joints...if the u joints are different change the yoke on the axle for what you need <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

I had a hard time telling how much farther the tires will stick out then the body. From what I could see (rolled jeep, tub tweaked to hell) they will stick out about 3 inches past the tub.

Any idea on the caster for 76 waggie. Don't want to have to worry about that part.

I put 77 waggy under my cj-5. I cut 4 inches off the long side and did not have to hang the springs outboard. I do have the offset rear diff. I went with 6.5* caster front and 7 in the rear.

Yeah, I got my pinyon up as high as possible for clearance and I think it's about 6*. Drives great.

3"? no biggie. Do it!

Personally I am replacing my D30 with an ARB equipt Currie D44 with D30 knuckles.
For my driving habbits I think this will be plenty.

Anyone have opinions on this type of a setup?
(Im sure you do)

The fella at Currie told me to use my D30 outer shafts and knuckles. He said they are very close the same strength as a D44 and I am going to break the u-joints first anyway.

I'm doing the same thing with my CJ5 right now. The way I looked at the width is the tires will be 3.5" farther out on each side than they are right now with narrow trac axles, at least for the front (61"-54" divided by 2). That assumes using the same size wheel, offset the same also.

Excellent upgrade. The 76 will have flat top knuckles on both side.

Yes flat top knuckles I forgot about that. I am starting to get excited.

any other problems people see or drawbacks.

Anyone know if the pinion yolk is farther away from the axle tube then a amc20. This would cause problems with the rear driveshaft and also the front.

Will having the front pumpkin offset further cause any problems with front driveshaft.

You could cut 4" off.. but then yer just as narrow as you used to be <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> I chose to outboard and Im totally happy with the added stability the wider axles gave my rig.

Not if you use wide track SJ and a narrow SJ in the rear, cut down the front 4" on one side and its a perfect fit and no outboarding

too much work though, I'm going to outboard mine when I do it
