I already made a crossmember for my trans, so i could run a flat skid but of course i over looked the most obvious part, what i did was use some 1 1/2 x 2 .120 wall sqaure stock boltd directly to the trans then for the rubber i put leaf spring bushings at each end and welded so pices of angle to the frame for the bushings on the x-member to bolt to. Problem is that the front output on my clocked d300 is right next to the trans mount so with the x-member bolted directly to the trans there isn't enough clearance for my front d-shaft. I don't want to make the crossmember curve down for clearance because i wouold lose my ability for a flat skid. if i welded a piece of thick plat to the sqaure stock so it would bring the crossmember back away from the front out put,
Would this put to much stress on the bushings from not haveing the wieght centered in the bushings?
Heres a kindergarden drawing of what i am thinking
Since he brought this up, I am planning to mount my 435 like this, but I wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Will the spring bushings absorb enough, or is it better to mount it on a tranny mount, and then just bolt up the crossmember?
i bolted the mount up solid to the frame then put a tranny mount on what would be your square stock, it gave me enough room, If you want a dana 300 rubber bushing mount I think I have a few laying around.
I was just thinking if i raise the engine a inch or 2 and put a 1 1/2 inch spacer in between the trans and the crossmember that should give me enough room for the driveshaft, How thick is the d300 rubber mount?
On the question, i don't know if the bushings at the end will work so i figured i'd give it a shot , if anyone has done it and worked or failed please chime in
thanks
The 300 does not have a mounting bushing, I have a mount that came off an SR4 that was mounted to a dana 300, It might work.
What tranny do you have?
I also have some VERY hard rubber material that I use for mounts and bushings..Im not sure what it is, I would say it is harder than Poly but it does absorb vibration...with this material I can custom build you a mount to what ever dimensions you need..height, width, and length can all be made to your custom specs. I can drill holes in it also for mounting..or you could do that.
The dana 300 Sr4 mount will run ya 18$ shipped to your door and the custom hard rubber mount would be 22$ to your door, I would cover shipping.
EDIT- Ok I just looked at your picture above..I could make you a rubber mounting pad that would be the same size as the yellow square. I can get you what height you want by stacking the pads...I have had that same setup on a jeep before and it worked much better than the stock mount..that was with the xmember solid to the frame
I was thinking about doing something like that, Just hard mount the crossmember to the frame rails and then sandwich a piece of hard rubber inbetween the trans and crossmember, The only reason i didn't pursue it was i wondered if the aluminum threads in the trans would "open up" and eventually strip because of the bolt would have too much movent since it couldn't really be torqued down to stay tight while the trans moved around. BUT i have no real knowledge about metal or rubber, or they way things work like that so .... Reason that even crossed my mind was because on the stock mount its got a plate on the bottom which goes to the crossmember and another metal plate on top that gets bolted directly to the trans with the rubber in between absorbing the vibs, So the bolts are torqed down and have no movement like a bolt going from the crossmember through rubber and into the trans,
AM I MAKEING TO MUCH OF ALL THIS, feels like it, I am going to go by carquest and look in their book of trans mounts and see if i can find something but if i don't i'll be giving you a call to try your poly like stuff.
Keep the ideas coming if ya got them
thanks
Question is on this rubber u guys are using... how does it hold up to the elements.... Trany fluid leaks.. are common... and destroys many many rubber and synthetic compounds. And other oils.. (gear oil) is near about as bad too.
My .02 is stick with manufactured mounts cause of this.
I guess I cant say that I have ran it long enough to call it a long term test.
The only fluid I have ever gotten on it was brake fluid...Slave cylinder went out and sprayed some of the clutch brake fluid out....Didnt seem to effect it.
Your point is well taken, I think I will keep and eye on it about every time I go wheeling and if it holds up for a few more years I will start letting other people use it.
Thanks
