Steering column help

I just pulled the tilt column out of my 88 yj (although the dash and cloumn I believe are a 94) and the column shaft that gets connected to the first U-joint on the steering shaft sticks out about three inches past the bearing assmbly on the end of the column. So I grab the brand new tilt column I bought and the column shaft is flush to the bearing assembly on the end of the column. How do I adjust the length of the column or is this just the wrong column? I don't see how it could be used in any vehicle like it is so there must be a way to lengthen that shaft. Hopefully someone can help me. BTW the old one was bent, never bent a column before, guess I should take it a little easier..... nah. haha Thanks!

Derek

Remove the cap and retainer/bearing assembly. Then grab the end of the shaft with a pair of pliers and pull. Put everything back together.

I would expect to get flamed also for posting in the wrong forum.
