Dana 300 short/long
Some time ago, I purchased a Novak 300MR-1 rebuild kit for a short-output Dana 300. I also have an Advance Adapters HD output for the short-output D300.
Unfortunately, I no longer have that case, now I've also got a 81-86 long output D300 that needs rebuilding. What's the difference between the two cases? If I want to use the rebuild kit, can I? Will I be missing much? How about the HD output? Can it even be swapped onto the later case? Or am I better off just selling it?

I take it you got the 727.

There is no internal difference between the long and short 300 so the kit will work for the internals. Only the output is different. I think you can use the short output kit on a long case but one of the bolts won't fit. Lots of guys use the long kits on short cases and just leave the bolt out. I don't know why it wouldn't work the other way around. Me? I would either get a short case or a long output.

the other hole
DANA had to move the bolt hole away from the output bore to make room for the electronic speedo thingy. So the short/early housing has all the bolt holes right around the bore. The long/later case has one hole moved out away from the bore. Are the short HD kits still short? I had to go with the common long/later model HD kit because the speedo is the same as a YJ/TJ. The short DANA 300 cases have a speedo cable that goes to the dash I think.

sorry for hijacking but does anyone have a pic of a long HD kit installed on a short output case? Any issues from leaving one bolt out?
I have a flipped short output 300 i want to install in my YJ but I need the electric speedo setup. My 91 YJ used the same cable as the short 300 so it wasnt an issue. |

Thanks Gary! But I'm trying to avoid collecting any more parts, and trying to use some of the "bling" (like the HD output) that's sitting in my garage collecting dust. The short output won't really make any difference for me. The big difference is that my old short output D300 was an IH (texas pattern), not a Jeep one. Now I've got a IH 727 from BamaScout with a waggy output so I can use the cheaper Jeep T-case. I'll probably just rebuild it as is and sell off the HD output.

When you flip the D300, the hole you are leaving out is on the top now. The output housing should fit tight in the bore. I didn't like the idea so I had a piece brazed on and drilled/tapped for the new hole. I assume you want pictures from those who left the extra bolt out? By the way, Novak had plans to make an extremely short output that fit both types of D300 cases, kind of like the NP231 extreme short HD kit, but they only made a few.

Here are the two castings we offer. The top is for the dana 300 long and the bottom is for the dana 300 short/IH. Have you installed and ran it yet? If not we can just exchange the kit for you.

Thanks for buying that odd ball from me... no one around here seemed to have any intrest in it. Let me know how you like it. My buddy had one built by the same guy and his has lasted 4 seasons now with no probems. We just run a big cooler on it and red line synthetic fluids.
