JK's 32 spline dana 44

Dose any one know if the JK’s 32 spline Dana 44 is the same as the 32 spline Dana 44 Nissan has been using for the last few years?

The JK rear axles are 30 spline and the front is also 30 spline. The front outters are 32 spline.

For the rear 35 and front 30, maybe.

It's basically the same as the Titan's but with a small mod and for the life of me can't remember what the difference is. It is 32 spline though on the Ruby.

What year did the Rubi Dana 44 go 32 spline? The older Rubi Dana 44 were 30 spline.

Wow, has everybody in here been living under a rock

He is asking about the New JK Dana 44, not the TJ Dana 44. In 07, when the new wrangler JK, came out, the jeep engineers up the spline counts in all the axles. Dana HP 30 fronts are now 30 spline; Dana 35, though I believe they stop putting them in the 08's, are also 30 spline; Dana 44 in both the Rubi and none are now 32 spline and I believe the front Dana HP 44 is now 32 or 33 spline. It you pick up any offroad mag covering the new JK it will give you the info.

The Nissan D44 (M226) variant is not the same as the JK, although they are very similar in terms of spline count (32) etc. The difference seems to be in the carrier and gears. Gears will not interchange between the Nissan and Jeep D44’s.

However, the Titan and Xterra D44’s are the same. The Nissan D44 has a couple of issues, especially with the electric locker. There are 2 and 4 spider gear variants, with the 4 spider gear variant being strongest. There is also a week axle end gear due to the excessive machining required to fit the electric locker. Titan’s were plagued with rear diff failures early on due to overheating. Nissan has generally fixed this with new aluminum diff covers.

For the Jeep they upsized the ring gear 10mm so they are now about 8 7/8" rather than 8.5". Don't know about the Niss.

Nissan ring gear is the same size as the new JK D44.

The old D44 (TJ) uses a 216mm (8.5") ring gear. The current JK and Nissan assemblies use the larger 226mm (8.9") ring gear, hence m226.

The difference between the Nissan and Jeep D44's is in the pinion shaft, meaning the gear sets are not interchangeable.

The both the Nissan and new Jeep D44 shafts are 34.7mm (1.366") diameter 32 spline.

Pre JK D44's are 1.31" 30 spline shafts, as they have been since Moses was a child.

I remember someone calling the JK axle a Dana 47. No idea if this is correct.

Dana changed their nomenclature at the end of 1994. Their model numbers now reflect the ring gear diameter in mm.
New Model# Ring Gear Dia Old Model#
149 149.23 mm M-21
165 165.10 mm M-26
174 174.00 mm M-28
181 180.98 mm M-30
186 186.00 mm Super 30
187 187.33 mm GT-20
194 193.55 mm M-35
198 197.61 mm Super 35
200 200.03 mm M-36
216 215.90 mm M-44
226 226.06 mm Super 44
229 228.60 mm M-50
248 247.65 mm M-60
256 256.00 mm Super 60
267 266.70 mm M-70
273 273.05 mm Super 70
286 285.75 mm M-80
314 314.33 mm M-95

Inside Dana, the JK Dana 44 is the Model 226, etc. Although the Auto manufacturers seem to name them what they wish, i.e. m226, Dana44HD etc.

There is no Dana 47 that I can find.

Dana has some good stuff posted although its a little dated:

I'm glad I found this thread I was thinking about throughing a set under my TJ. There really pretty affordable, $1479.00 for the front 44 and $1349 for the rear and that also includes brakes. This is the e-mail that jeep sent.

"Now available exclusively from Mopar Performance-Jeep Wrangler Rubicon front and rear axle assemblies. These assemblies will provide the next level of off-road performance for your CJ,YJ, or TJ. The axles are shipped with the current Jeep Wrangler Rubicon suspension mounting brackets installed. They are completely assemblied, with a 4.10 gear, disc brakes, and locking differential with locking sensor. A limited slip rear axle assembly is also available. Adaption of these units into previous models is the responsibility of the purchaser."

So I would need to cut off all the nes suspension stuff and weld on tj stuff
