YJ on 404's

YJ on 404ís

This build has been somewhat ongoing for the past two years, but I think it finally is going to start to get interesting. I started with a 93 yj 4.0 which I have had for the past 10 years. I ran stock with 32s until I was able to finally afford what I wanted to do.
Here is the jeep before I did anything to it.

1st thing I did was put a 4.5 inch RE lift on it and some 35ís. Then I swaped out the d35 for a f8.8 with a detroit and I put an arb into the dana 30 All a big waste of $$$. Ran it like this for a bit.

Decided I wanted a cage so talked to a few local guys and bought a bender, bend tech ez 3d and a notcher.
My 1st job with the bender

Pulled it all out and welded it up.
Back in and painted.

Cage done for now.

Jeep did ok as it was but was figuring out that I wanted to go bigger!
At Fordyce

Came across a pretty good deal on some axles.
Didnít know what I wanted to do with them. Put them on the current ride or start a new one? The mogs sat in the yard for a few months while I thought about what do do with them.

Breaking the dana 30 going down hill helped me figure out what I was gonna do with the mogs real quick.

If youíre running the dana 30 a spare shaft isnít enough cary upper and lower ball jointsÖ This thing broke way to easy, oh well live and learnÖ

The Exaxt disc brake conv. Couldnít be any easier (after buying a HF press).

Conv. kit
Portal removed
404 shaft

Portal housing on the bench with the hub (now garbage) and main gear removed.
The new hup put together.
New hub with studs and caliper brackets bolted on.
F350 calipers and rotors.
H2 wheels on.

Got anxious and put just the tires under it. I wish I could get it this low. This will probably be how it sits full stuff.

I got kicked by a horse last week and had to get some screws and plates put in my arm. So Iíll be down for a few weeks to let it heel.
Got most the parts on order to finish this thing and they should be here by the end of next week. This is my 1st build, being done by asking a lot of questions and buying a red star. All help and comments are appreciated. Ill update as soon as the arm is good to go.

Looks like a great start, I'm jealous to say the least. What's the expected wheelbase and potential ride height?

Right now the GOAL is to get the wb somwhere around 110" and Would like to keep the the top of cage under 87". Gonna be tough to keep it low.

Im headed out to Shawns house to continue finishing up my dana 60/70 so I can get them slapped under my rig. This spring and summer should be a good one

What is the width difference between the 404s and say a 60/14b combo?

depending on where you muont the uppers mounts for the coilovers, you shouldn't have much of a problem keeping your height you want, you'll just have hoops sticking through the hood, which is always cool. i'm at 110'' and at about 83'' or so to the top of the cage, i can fit through a standard garage door easily. i could have lowered it quite a bit if i would have gone with a 3 link instead of the double triangulated 4 link up front.

here's what mine looked like before it was done (only good side pic of it).

If I have to run the hoops through the hood I will, but still gonna be a challenge because of the mogs.

the mogs are the only reason i would think you would have to run them through the hood, as long as you don't go crazy long on the coilover, keep it to like a 12'' or so, and you'll be fine.
