seems to be easy swap, all you need 1st gear and countershaft from toyota r151 transmission (i dont know about U.S. models, mine is from LJ-70 cruiser)
just pulled both trannys to pieces, ill info later how this swap works.

toyota r151 gear ratio:

4.31 2.33 1.44 1.00 0.83 4.22

ax-15

3.83 2.33 1.44 1.00 0.79 4.22

toy 32 teeth on left , Jeep 31 teeth on right

Countershafts, lower is toy (11 vs. 12 teeth in first gear)

only difference is 5th gear locking, but same lenght in both axles. so that isn´t problem.

ok, more info for you :D

one option is to use g452 transmission gears from Toyota Dyna truck

ratios: 5.15 2.74 1.93 1.00 0.83 5.04

just bolted all parts together today, all gears work and trans rotates smoothly.
it takes couple months before i can test drive it, axle and D300 swap isnt´t finished yet........

Very interesting.

Two months ago an article in 4wd & Sport Utility mentioned AX-15 gears from a diesel application in 4.3, but didn't get more specific than that:

"The AX-15 transmission in front of the NV242 has gears from a diesel truck that give it a 4.3:1 first gear instead of the standard YJ 3.8:1. Phil changed to the AX-15 from the original Peugeot tranny to get rid of the problematic HydraClutch throwout bearing and use the later hydraulic slave cylinder."

Yeah, Marlin sells the 5.15 gearsets, has for a long time. I have seen threads he's posted about applicability, there are some differences between early and late style AX15s, and I don't know that it'll work for the late style.

Frankly, I'm suprised its taken this long for someone to do this in the Jeep forum. I've been planning to try it, if I ever got back to an AX15 again.

So your saying, We can just buy the gear sets and install them from Marlin?! I will be calling first thing this Monday! Its about time there be stuff out there to upgrade these trannies!(I hope)

I just got off the phone with a rep at Marlin. He claims they don't sell the gear sets any more. Haven't sold one in over 4 years. Also, He does not know where to get the gear sets. All sets are from Japan only as he claims. Thier transmission builders will not disclose any secrets of specs on anything as well.

He did say that the donor truck for the 5.15 set is called the "Hino Diesel truck" from Japan only. No domestic applications. I asked for a nomenclature of the tranny, and He did not know.

As for the 4.3 set, we all know what to look for. But the rep said good luck on that one as well.

Any one here rub shoulders with Marlin? Any one have a hookup in Japan?

I am sure we could track one of those trucks down some place??? That is to bad they will not help out on this great upgrade for the AX15. I will keep looking and see what I can figure out.

I did a search for the truck and it looks like they are delt with here in the good old USA.

We need to know the exact transmission in order to figure out the parts.

James called me back with some info. He was able to twist the techy's arm for info. The tranny we want is called a R452 and was behind the 5M turbo diesal engine. These where available in Australia, New Zealand, Japan.

Edit: just got off the phone with a US Hino parts dealer. Hopefully he can chime in and help.

Just sit back and wait and continue research on our own till the Hino tech can get back with me. It might take 2-3 weeks for him to research and find what we need.

Google is our friend!

according marlin board: AX-15 input shaft wont work with R452 gears, AX-15 has 29 teeth and R452 26 teeth. but 4.3 geared r151f is same 29 teeth.

toyota input shaft is too short and have different splines for Jeep 4.0.

my 4.3 1st geared AX-15 still lie on table...... waiting for install.....

Well, Marlin did quote me about 1100 to build my tranny with the 4.3 first gear. And thats bringin in my transmission for the modification. They have the gear sets, they will not sell them individually.

As far as transmission shops go, you show me a shop that has knowledge on this subject and let me know. Im beginning to believe I am surrounded by Idiots this day and age. All they know how to do is BS you and steal your money.

I want a machine shop to build the bottom end of my 4.7 liter stroker with all the best parts for a turbo application. But I don't trust em. Just when they find out what they are building, they are likely to give me a stock rebuilt 4.0 and sell the parts under my nose!

Marlin is the only business I trust if I do go that route.

The tranny shops around here are jokes. One knows what he's doing but he's lazy and sloppy and will leave stripped bolts and shit like that, unless you're his friend then he'll do a killer job and hook you up. He put a clutch in the Rodeo I had it was supposed to be done in a day, it was there for WEEKS. The other is in cahoots with the junkyard right across the street and they'll spray paint a transmission and charge you for a brand new one they got from across the street. A friend of mine had a V8 ZJ I eventually bought from him. Me and a couple other friends did a 242 swap for him cuz the shitty 249 was shot, well it was making some noise so he took it to them, $900 later he had a "new" transfer case but they took off the front driveshaft and gave it to him and said it needed u-joints. They were SHOT..that was his whole problem. The case was fine..I got under and looked and it was the same exact case we put in there they spraypainted it and you could look up higher and see dirt and mud and shit on it. Thats the case I still have in my jeep now.. I rolled that one, bought a 98 318 and put the 242 in that cuz that shitty 249 was shot too (go figure) Fucking idiots. Can't trust anyone really it pissed me off. Sorry for the long rant. Back on topic now...

Wish I knew about this when I rebuilt my ax-15. I already had to replace 1st gear! Couldn't find a thrust washer anywhere! After waiting about 2 months on 3 different online stores it finally hit me, maybe I should call the stealership! 2 days later I had it for about 5 bucks more than online! Oh well, I sold it anyways. NV4500 6.34:1 1st :p

Do you use the ax-15 thrust washer or the toy? Or does it matter? Might do this on a buddies, he's leaking at the intermediate plate really bad anyways.

Im not sure what washer do you mean? But all bearings and synchro rings are same in both transmissions.
