Who has extensive experience with the Howell TBI conversion for the 6cyl?
I looked in the search, and found some limited info. I've got an 83 CJ7 with a freshly rebuilt motor I'd like to put a TBI unit on.
I've ruled out the Holley Pro-Jection unit. I have a friend who has the Mopar kit on his '83, and has had a lot of difficulty getting it to perform correctly. So, I guess that narrows it down to the Howell TBI... I'd like to hear how it has performed over time for those who have owned one for a time. Does it stay adjusted easily? Is mileage and power acceptable? Is off-road performance appreciably improved? Thanks

I've had it on my 258 for three years without a stitch of trouble. It's not a daily driver by any means, but it starts immediately even after sitting for up to two weeks at a time. There are no adjustments to be made, so yes it stays adjusted correctly. The computer is closed loop and it takes care of itself. Mileage I don't keep track of. It's not in high range much so it wouldn't be applicable. Power is better than with a carb and always runs no matter what the angle the Jeep is on. Personally it is the single best modification made to any Jeep I have owned.
I convinced a friend to add it to his '86 and his results would echo mine. Last edited by CSP; 08-24-2002 at 10:09 PM. |

Thanks, glad to hear about your good experience. This won't be a daily driver, just mostly for trail use, but it will see some road time.
Have always had trouble with the carb, and now with a fresh motor it's a real shame to have it hamstrung with poor carburetion. Now, to shell out more bucks!

howell is just one option...
there is always they junkyard version, same parts as howell, but you put them together and save a good bit of money this site will give you the how to and this guy (john) will also put together a kit for alot less then howell for you... www.customefi.com there are a few other companies that will put them together for you or people who can help you do it yourself... http://www.fuelinjection.com/ http://www.carflix.com/index.htm?loc=/tbi.cfm http://www.affordable-injection.com/ there are a few more if you look, plus many people on this board, jeepweb, and ju who have done it them selves or who have gone through john or howell who can help you out. i got a tbi and an ecm off ebay and howell said they would sell me the kit minus those two parts for $620 so i may just do that to eliminate the hassle. lots of options :-) -web

BOB do you have any more photos of your RIG online??
I am chopping up an XJ right now and I wanted to do the closed back end thing like BORTON from JU. I would like to close it off completly and build a bed like you have on your rig. |

the site is
www.customefis.com (with an S) I bought a kit from John and it was the best money I ever spent on my jeep... His customer service is excellent.... He even supplies you with applications for the parts so you can buy replacements at autozone if you ever need any.... The computer does all the adjusting, and alot of the troubleshooting if anything goes wrong... |

I've gotten two emails in the last two days asking how I did that, I guess I'll have to put together a little post and describe, the best I can, how I did the work. Look for it in a day or two when I get the time to sit down and remember all I did.
