alright im ready to be flamed, but my little brother is restoring his cj3-a for the most part stock, everything is ready to roll, and were getting it all back together, it has a full cage and will be one nice little DD when its done my question is, he has a ranco 2.5 inch suspention lift, what sizes tires can he fit? i told him 32's on a 15x8 rim, am i wrong..... remeber its bone stock, sides for the seats and cage......
at some point we were thinking 302-np435-dana20 or 300 with spring over and EB axles with hp 9inch center....
31x10.5 fits nice, and if you use a 15x8 rim the tires don't rub on the front springs as much. If you use a 12.5" wide tire without spacers or more offset, it really cuts down your turning radius. I ran 33's with a 2.5" suspension lift and 1" body lift.
The front axles will survive 33's if you are a finese driver, if youu like jamming the skinny pedal on the floor you will break the shafts and bend the housing (I bent 2).

Come on Chuck, you completly forgot to mention how weak the spiders are also, along with the tooth-pick sized axle shafts I busted some spiders and a long side shaft with everything stock on my 2A, and skinny 32's So skinny 32-33's should be fine for DDing, get spares for wheelin.

I never broke a spider, or the shaft itself. I blew up 2 rezeppa joints. I ran 33x9.5's for 3 years with the front D25, my main problem was bending the housings into smiley faces.
I suspect that if you put any kind of locker in there, that more parts would start exploding.
It's also worth noting that my spooled Rear D41 is still intact using 35" tires So maybe I have more finesse than most:flipoff2:
I think you are right. 32 it's the maximun. As stated before remenber the strengh of those axles and second your brother will hate to go uphill with the four popper ( Even with your 5:38's)
I can tell you this, because I use to have a CJ3b as DD with 33"and it was awfull going uphill. Also beware with the offset of the wheel or you will need a football course to make a U turn (the tire sticks in the frame rail)
Hope this helps
more fun news, we pulled the head late last night, and number 3 piston is shelled out, pitted to hell, measure the bores, and its .080 over factory but the cylinder walls look fine, so means that some dummie punched it way over, and now im wondering, what in the hell should we do, get a new piston from someone like north-star willies(great company if you redoing a flatty in the mid-west)or should we look for a replacement motor, and im just wonder what, because, its bone stock, he is just in HS, and the money aint there to replace driveline and shit....
thanks for the info on the tires size, what rim back spacing should he be thinking of.
this lil thing is gunna be nice when were done, increase the flattie fleet too 2,one cj-2a and one cj-3a, one in OD, and the new one is gunna be IH read and black.
buy the way, it wont be wheeled to hard, its his pride and joy, love it more than his girlfriend, which is very smart cuz that jeep will never screw him over.....
I have 31X11.50X15 on my stock height CJ2A.. I get a little rubbing with the wheel fully turned but not enough to cause any problems.. I have a swapped in 2.5 from a 83 CJ7 which has more than enough power for any climbing, sand running,or mud running(apparently unlike SVARAS)..There is a guy in Ny that has a T90/D18 with a Chevy bellhousing if you are planning to swap a Chevy V6/V8 or the Pontiac 2.5 (this is the engine I have)liter 4 cylinder.. If you would be interested in it I can give you his E-mail so you can contact him..
