Alright, I was told initially that I could pull the 2.5 from my T.J. and pretty much bolt in a 4.0 WRONG!!!!! I'm already over $2000 into the project and getting pretty discouraged. I've got most of the six cyl. parts to make it work, but my six. clutch plate doesn't have the right splines to match my four cyl. trans. input shaft. The bellhousing doesn't match either, but I think I've figured that out. The question here is, I'm planning on getting the four-cyl. clutch plate and using it with the six. cyl. pressure plate. The difference between the two is a 10 3/8" plate on the six, and a 9 3/8" plate on the four. It's a centerforce dual friction, and it seems to me that it would hold. ANY input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanx,
very helpful.
somebody probably sent the poor guy here for help and that's the best you can come up with.
First, do a search on "Newbie"
the most common words you'll see in every response is "SEARCH, NEWBIE!"
then go to the seach button and search on "4.0L swap"
Sundowner - What more should I have said? I can go on about bolt patterns and such, but what's the point? "You can't" is enough don't you think?
Here's the answer I wanted to send - "You should have thought this through better before starting the swap instead of coming onto POR and whining that this is already costing too much and showing us how smart you are(n't) by throwing some clutch specs on a question. "
Alright smartazzes, maybe I shouldn't have added the "ANY input would be appreciated." I stated in my post that I realize the bellhousing isn't going to work. Ok, I'll say that ONE more time for you guys that read slow. I KNOW THE SIX CYLINDER BELLHOUSING WON'T WORK. Now, maybe we can move on to the question that I originally asked. Is the four cylinder clutch gonna hold up.
Then You are going to have swap the input gear in t-case from a 21 to a 23 spline unit. Find a used AX-15 or NV3550 w/ clutch and bolt it together :flipoff2:. Newbie.
Sell all that :rainbow: 4.0L junk and run a 2.5, or swap it out for a GM 3800 V6, it will bolt to your AX-5, then run it gingerly while looking for an AX-5 replacement, an SM420 with a GM 2.8 V6/T5 bellhousing from an S-10 works well with the Novak adapter to your NP231, or if you like slush boxes, a 700R4 from a 2.8l will botl up, and you could run an S-10 NP231. 4.0L to AX-5 will not work, and if you're thinking that the AX-15 bellhousing will fit the AX-5 because they look similar, grab a tape measure, the AX-15 is way bigger
I didn't say use a 2.8L, just a trans from behind one, or any other longitudinally mounted 60 degree V6. I loved how the GM 2.8L V6 made 4Wheel & Off-Road's top ten list of 4x4 stuf that should have never happened, right next to the early Ford ram assist power steering. 2.8's should have come with spare rod bearings in the glove box.
Personaly, for the money you've spent, I would have swapped in a 350 or somethin w/ more git up than a 4.slow. I already did this to my TJ so im bias. Anyays, if you can score an ax15, I have a 23 spline input for your 231 that I'm willin to come off of for 10 bucks. I bought it from AA when I swapped in my NV4500 but then went to an Atlas so now I have a bunch of spair parts. I have a 21 spline one too if anybody wants one. holla
