Well that's one way to retard your timing, but I prefer to just turn the distributor.

Picked up an 85 grand waggy.
It has a few things wrong with it this is one of them.
Dude says the motor was rebuilt less then 50,000 miles ago.
I believe him. I pulled the pan and everything looks real purty.

What will cause the Distributor gear to do do this?
Oiling?

I am going to replace the distributor gears the timing chain if it looks like it needs replacing (shouldn't)
Going to replace the wqater pump and the insides of the oile pump while I have the damn thing apart.

Anything I should keep an eye out for?

Yeah... the oil pump impellers that rest in the timing chain cover. Make sure they are "ok", and there is no gauges.

Bad news if you need a new cover, I heard Olympic 4x4, in Snohomish, WA may have them for $250, otherwise its dealer and $600. You may be able to get it sleeved to.
