I have a 1970 CJ5. Actually its my dads. He wants to switch to an automatic tranny. Question is, what tranny is the best to go with? Is there an easy answer? Should we try and find one froma jeep or use maybe a TH350?
Second question is does anyone have a stock roll bar from a '70 cj5 sitting around? I could use one. Dont want to pay to much though.
I HAVE A 70'S CJ-5 STOCK ROLL BAR "CHEAP" IN UKIAH. SHOOT ME AN E-MAIL. STAY WITH THE STICK SHIFT, AN AUTO-TRANNY IS TO LONG FOR A CJ-5 ESPICIALLY IF YOU PLAN ON LIFTING IT AND HAVING FLEXY SPRINGS.
I have a front cage kit for you and I'm on the penninsula, south of the city. $80
I don't know how well a th350 will work especially being a short cj5 but if you get it in there the drive shaft will probably hit the trans pan. That's why the Jeep th400 has a clocked bell housing compared to the other TH400s. If you move that motor forward and rear rearward maybe you'll get on in there. Infact there was an AMC th400 in the for sale list.

You mention length as a concern with a TH350 and then suggest he try a TH400? Are you aware that the TH400 is considerably longer tranny especially in the driveshaft length challenged, pre-AMC CJ5? A TH350 would be a bitch to make work. A TH400 is next to impossible. Can you say two ujoints with a slip joint connecting them for a rear driveshaft?:flipoff2:
