Pros Cons of Front or rear stretch!!!

So heres the situation... I want to do a real stretch. I already have a 95 yj with waggy fronts all around and a wheel base at about 98 -99" 44 in the rear and a jk front 44 in the works for the front. I want to do a stretch to get to a 100-102" wheel base.I would love to do a rear stretch(xj springs) to lengthen the rear driveshaft and make the wheel base a little and longer but that would mean i would have to comp corner my rig and in pa you cant no matter which way you look at it you have to comp ! So i was thinking of the front stretch instead to keep it legal. Using the 87-95 astro 2wd steering box relocate the shackle mounts, cause im keeing the shackles in the front ,and lengthen my front driveshaft which is not a problem . Whats the down side of a front stretch with xj springs, is it worth it over a rear stretch ? Hows the axle wrap in the front? any pros and cons? I'd love to see some pics of some front stretches or rear stretch's that dont include comp corners?

XJ springs in the front can cause some axle wrap issues because they are soft. I personally like front stretches, it spreads the weight of the drivetrain a little bit more evenly across the front and rear axles.

Stretch the front using a astro van box and arm. You will have to clock the box on the frame so the arm is not hanging down low.

Look at White Cracker's build on here. He has some clean looking lines on his rig You can't tell its stretched front and rear (if your a cop) so you will still look legal in the rear.

You dont have to comp cut the rear if you stretch the frame and tub.

yeah when I built this one, that's about as far as a stretch as I could get keeping the tub from being comp cut. I'd run the XJ's in the rear and 3 or 4 link the front to get the rest of the stretch you need. Running the 44044's in the front and the XJ's springs in the rear I was at like 100" or maybe 101". The rear spring perches had 3 holes that I could set the springs in. I ended up using the back hole to get 5" of strecth but could have gone up to 7" in the rear. I would have had problems mounting the fender flares though going any farther then I did.

I'm about to stretch the front of my cj5 6-7" and was also wondering about steering box. I can't really use the astro van steering box with my setup, so was wondering about the scout steering box that mounts on the outside of your frame and has the forward pitman arm. Is this an alright idea, or does this steering box suck or does the location pose any problems for anything? I'm running waggy 44's.

geberhard, did you filip the xj spring to get the full 6" of stretch or did you put them on the same way as a cherokee?
Today i just got done military wraping my waggy front springs using an xj and removed the last leaf (6leaf pack front, using only 5 leafs from a waggy 7 leaf pack) came out awesome.I was goign to use the xj pack for a stretch but the pack had 2 cracked leafs including the 2"add a leaf I can easliy come across another leaf pack at our shop. Heres some pics of the military wraped springs and a side view of my mild stretch.

I Think this might be the route i'd like to take, cause i have the offset perchs and what not, and would keep me from comp cornering, untill it becomes a rail only rig. Did you move the gas tank ?. But if i were to utilize my offset perchs with my waggy springs i could get another 2" 1 front 1 rear which would bring me to the 100 mark.

I put a 19 gal RCI fuel cell behind the rear seat. WAY CHEAPER than buying a genrite stretch tank.

RCI Racing 2191A - RCI Aluminum Fuel Cells

I've seen guys put jeep sending units in them but you have to do some modifying.

I got my last tank on ebay for 150.00

Fuel cell

Looks like it comes with the float and the fuel pump. Not bad. Is your pump pretty loud being that the tank is inside the cab?

It just has a sending unit inside, no pump. Mine was a CJ with a Chevy 350 so I had a mechanical pump on the motor.

If you plan on XJ springs then more than likely a traction bar will be needed.

I used the JC Whitney "HD" XJ replacement springs in the rear and reversed(for about 12" of stretch... they are mounted off the rear bumper) and killed them just test driving around the block a couple times with no traction bar. The torque from the drivetrain causes body roll and because of that the passenger side leaf is slightly negatively arched at ride height.

With the traction bar it is tits... takes off nice and flat now(traction bar on passenger side = combats body roll to some degree).

So if you use XJ leaves(especially flipped around) then either build a traction bar before you even use them or beef them up a lot with more leaves and stuff.

As for front vs rear stretch... I did a comp cut to get my wheels as far back as possible and only moved the front maybe 4", I'd say you should takes yours as far back as you can without cutting and stretch the front as far as you can as well. Probably end up around 106" or so?

Well let me get this right , Just to clear it up for those who may not know this. If you flip an xj spring where the larger of the two eyelits are at the shackle end 7" of stretch can be made . If put on normally as found on and xj how much stretch? Any downsides of utilizing offset perchs?

Lets keep the pictures comming really helps with anyones build
