Silly CJ5 1 Ton

So I had the build thread over on the zombie board so I figured I would share. All fabrication don by Phil at SFS Industries, formerly known as SillyFab. This all started in February of 2008.

I currently have a 1958 CJ-5 with a 12 bolt lincoln locked, and a 10 bolt up front open; both with 5.38:1 gears. It also has a Chevy 350 in it with an SM420, and Dana 300 t-case. I got a good deal on a 1974 Blazer on 1 tons; Dana 60 front with ARB and 4.56:1 gears, and rear is a 14 bolt full floater with detroit and 4.56:1 gears.

I will be swapping axles and then also taking the winch and then attempting to sell the Blazer. I brought it home and I am ready to tear the axles off!!! I am taking the axles, tires, the truck avenger carb, edelbrock manifold, and it has a brand new PSC steering box, reservoir and pump with brand new crossover steering.

I will take pictures as I tear it down. I will be selling the rest shortly. It has a brand new tera flex lift kit, reverse shackle flip kit, rebuilt transmission, and a ton more stuff!

Here is what I am starting with:

Not much is left. My buddy is taking the windshield frame to convert his into a convertible and the title. He is also taking the lift. I have the front bumper, tailgate without glass, front and rear seats, roll cage, winch, fenders, Lt wheel well, grill, hood, h4 hella head lights, NP203, TH350, radiator and steering column. I also have a bunch of odds and ends left in the truck. Let me know if you need anything from it before we junk the rest.

I have a brand new aluminum 1" body lift, and also brand new F250 mounts.

Here are some pics of the progress after today:

Here is the progress after tonight. Now I need to sell some of the stuff I got off of it that is taking up space in my garage and then rip out my axles.

The 1 tons are in!!! I need to dump those 37's! I will soon be going with 42's with beadlocks. Also during all of this the Dana 20 was yanked and replaced with a Dana 300 with an AA adapter. The clutch looks good but the hydraulics might be messed up, we are just going to replace them.

I just need a D44 yoke and also a CV yoke for the Dana 300.

Next up I want to stretch the wheelbase 4 inches.

Here is a side shot:

Here is a front/side shot:

Here is the rear:

I plan to remove the rear tire carrier, comp cut the rear and tube the rear portion of the frame to extend the wheelbase about 7 inches. Then chop all the crap off the front and remake all of that to stretch the front 3 inches, longer springs and give me a better approach angle.

What do you think?

So it started today!!! With just the rear stretched it is at 107" and probably not going any lower unless I take out the body lift. My friend is going to re-do the front and stretch that a few inches after Memorial Day.

A rack will be built on the back with a cooler and hi-lift mount.

Ok so it is done until after memorial day weekend. It sits on 42 Iroks with 17" beadlocks, 107" wheelbase, F150 rear springs, a new winch, a cooler rack, truck avenger carb and performer intake manifold.

All work has been done at Sillyfab Service by Phil. He does a hell of a job!!

I am going to have the front pushed out another 4 inches, do some front tube work, a rear stinger, link the front with coils and hydro assist steering.

I stopped by Phil's shop today to see the front end chopped off!!!

The checklist is as follows (in no particular order):

* Full PSC single ended hydro steer
* 4 link front with wild horse 3.5 coils
* Push front out another 2 inches
* Tube out the front half of the frame to include new engine mounts, tranny mounts and cradle
* New winch mount and front bumper with stinger
* Slant the hood/nose
* Wrap bar for the rear
* Add on to the cage in the rear to include a rear stinger/bumper
* Propane kit - I still need to locate a tank...ANYONE?
* New wire harness; re-wire the entire truck!
* New gauges
* New switch panel
* New steering wheel
* Grind down the frame smooth
* Replace the twisted rear leafs
* Possibly tube fenders

Phil does kick ass work and I will be at his shop every chance I get helping and working on it to get it done for Labor Day (2008). Whatever does not get done before Labor Day will get done right after. I will be going to Fordyce if anyone wants to join. We will be camping before the trail gets to where you need to put it into 4 wheel drive which will allow a lot of people that do not have capable rigs to come and party with us!

So it got a makeover along with all the work that Phil did.

Also got a new driver...just for the day.

not too much has changed. Raised the rear shackles 2 inches so it would ride better, added an additional crossmember, skid plate for the hydro ram, and an anti-wrap bar for the rear. I just ordered the wild horse 4.5 springs to swap out the 3.5's in the front. Also gonna just add a couple of d rings to suck the front down and 1 in the front and rear just for a grab point. I have ditched the propane idea after gathering 3 tanks and the whole setup. I hopefully have someone coming to get it this weekend. I am in search of a TBI engine, I have vortec heads here, and I will throw a cam in it and that's probably it.

It's alive!

Finally almost done with the TBI motor swap. I did the wiring myself utilizing binderplanet.com, very easy!

I also swapped in some celica seats and a fancy new fuel cell.

Off to Phil's (SillyFab) this week for exhaust and then shes all ready!

Ok so I put a new chip in the computer, new wire harness, breather for the tank, gas gauge, larger steering cooler, heat wraps for the plug wires, and a larger intake filter.

I went to PC this past weekend to test out the motor and it is a beast!

I just took the extra stock axles that I had and put in new u-joints, new inner seals and race, and brand new Warn premium hubs. I will either install them this week or next. I was going to go with 35 splines but I figured I would just rebuilt the extra ones and switch out the old ones.

Who wants to wheel??????

This pretty much brings us current to this season.

A massive rack, additions to the cage, bump stops, limits straps, rear disc conversion, line locks, new MC, adjustable proportion valve, Bilsteins all around and a few other things...

Over the past few weeks I have sacked up and conquered Sluice Box and Winch Hill 3. I also just ordered Chromo Shafts, inners and outers.

Phew! So that brings us to today. In the next week or so it goes back to Phil's shop so we can change out the bushings on the rear springs, box in the rear part of the frame or figure something else out with the bump stops as they are bending the lower part of the C channel. Phil is going to make a dual battery tray and then hopyfully install my new chromos and flanges.

Next up... Dana 300 4 to 1 upgrade and HD outputs for the Hammers. I think we all might head to the hammers for KOH.

Love the stance of your 5! This Jeep is beautiful! Subscribed. You wouldn't want to sell the metal doors from the top of the post would ya? I have the same top for one of my beaters, but no doors. It gets cold in Iowa.

I do not have them, I sold them a long time ago.
